Ashley and I got married on February 7th, 2003. We have been husband and wife for 17 months but have spent only 7 of them living under the same roof. Over our short marriage we have experienced war, pregnancy, displacement, career shift, a difficult childbirth, and first-time parenthood (and all that before our first anniversary). In spite of the adversity, we have not despaired or grown separate from one another. Instead, through God's grace, our new family has flourished. We are healthy. We are happy. We are hopeful.
We are also very much in love, so we have a measure of regret when we look back...because we never had a wedding. Like all engaged couples, we had some really great plans. We were planning our perfect day, and we wanted to have it with our families present. Life doesn't usually "do" perfect, though, so our plans had to shove over and let necessity drive for a while.
Ashley's unit got called to alert status in January '03, and a lengthy deployment became certain. We knew that the only way to ensure all our financial and business affairs could be managed was to "hurry up and get married." We ran down to the courthouse and spent 10 minutes in a room with a judge, Susan, and 3 friends who insisted on coming to lend the thing a sense of occasion. A month and 11 days later, Ashley left for the war. Five days after he got back, we gave birth to our beautiful daughter, Elizabeth. 11 months of hectic scrambling to find order and establishment have followed.
Now, we're finally hitting a long prayed-for patch of peace and stability. With this relative quiet, we want to go back to where we were before all the interruptions came. We're ready to pick up that list of perfect plans and dust it off. We've put those plans down on these pages, and we hope you'll enjoy watching them develop and come to fruition. Click on "Covenant" to read about our faith-based beliefs in what marriage should be. Click on "Ceremony" to read about our search for a church family and officiant. We'll also keep updates on ceremony details, here, when the time comes. Click on "Cake & Candles" to read about cutesy wedding plans like flowers, reception ideas, honeymoon stuff, and lots of pictures.
We're ready to get married...again. This time, it won't be rushed and impersonal. This time, we're going to invite our family and loved ones to attend. This time, there will be cake! This time, we're doing it our way; God's way; the right way. We sincerely hope that you'll celebrate with us.
