Toy Story
Game Boy * Black Pearl

Review by Jonathan Ratcliffe
6.5

With a major motion picture release, it's only a matter of time before a game is created from the movie. Not surprisingly, Toy Story was created for Game Boy, along with other ACM games such as Killer Instinct and Donkey Kong Country. Personally, I don't find this a good idea. Games that look good on 16-bit are ruined when translated to the Game Boy, and this gives the game a bad name.

Toy Story for Game Boy is essentially the same as it's 16-bit counterparts, but with the visual splendor toned down to some extent. You control Woody, one of the popular characters from the movie, and must accomplish specific tasks which retain part of the motion picture's story. Unfortunately, the game is quite difficult, especially considering the young age group that it's aimed toward.

The graphics aren't very eye-appealing, but they're still fairly good for the Game Boy's limited abilities. Woody is animated superbly, better than I expected I must say, but this good feature is drowned out by the choppy animation during screen movement. The difficulty of jumping from platform to platform leaves the player frustrated from the poor control. Sluggish city? Does this always happen on ACM Game Boy games? I'd like to be proven wrong.

I'm glad to find that the soundtrack isn't overly annoying. It's pretty close to that on the Super NES and Genesis, give or take a few notes.

I'm sure Toy Story wouldn't be all that bad if you were on a trip and had only Game Boy games to play, but anyone who has grown accustomed to the games of the next-gen systems may not want to consider this one. Not a game you'd want to spend a great deal of time with, but it could certainly be an ideal alternative.
