Candle Flame Animation Basics

  • Candle Flame - 3 parts

Flame

  • The flame is composed of three parts - a central flame shaped flame, a blue base, and a glow sphere.
  • The central object has a base color 254, 241, 191.  It is a fog object with a fog length of 500, radial falloff - 200, hot center - 40 and 3 overdrive.
  • Three texture maps - Ghost fog to fade the edges, RjjCircle - oval color gradient, and ABfakely to give a blue edge to the outer flame.
  • Ghost Fog - length at T is 1659 and T is 0.37.
  • RjjCircle - colors 1 thru 4 are 29, 5, 0; 98, 77, 20; 245, 168, 65; 0,0,0.  Blend Controls are 0.07, 0.61, 1.00, and 0.00.  Do Blend and Affect Color are checked. Parameters: frequency - 1, phase - 0.5, turbulence - 0, octaves - 6, scale - 16, noise - 0.00.  Back, Front, around y, blend out and do outer are checked.
  • ABfakely - front color is inherit object color, side color is 2, 16, 183.  Affect color start angle 50, end angle - 72.5.

Glow Object (not shown)

  • The glow object is a perfect sphere with a base color of 252, 250, 215.  There are three textures fakely, fakely, and Rjjnoisebump.

  • Fakely #1 - affect color, threshhold 0.64, side 25, 15, 204, front 252, 250, 161. (light yellow center, blue edges)

  • Fakely #2 - affect filter, threshhold 0.46, side 255, 255, 255, front 254, 254, 254. (very transparent)

  • Rjjnoisebump - height 0.20, tc 1.00, bc 0.00, octaves 4.00. frequency 1.00, phase 0.00, turbulence 0.00, octaves 6.00, scale 32, noise 0.00. ( add some noise to the glow)

Blue Base

  • color - 15, 21, 253.  Filter 248, 248, 248.   No textures. ( Needed a bigger blue edge at the flame base )

Flame Body

  • A deformed sphere which was tapered and shaped using the deformation tools.

Flame Base

  • The bottom of a copy of the  flame body was chopped off and slight scaled up.  It matched the flame body bottom perfectly of course.

Wax Candle

  • Three objects - basic candle, and two wax drips.   It could have been one joined object at the end as all settings are the same.

  • Color 255, 255, 255 / Specular 243, 243, 243 / Hardness 100 / one texture - statue - no color, Color clip 0.40, size 10, 10, 10, tc 0.45, bc 0.55, bump size 0.55, dispersion 0.70.  Noise 1 mag 0.2, vel 10, Noise 2, mag 2.5, vel 1.2

Basic Candle

  • The basic candle is a tapered closed cylinder.   The top is a half sphere, slightly altered with the center deleted and then joined to the cylinder.

  • I needed a nice rounded edge with numerous faces which I could deform to simulate a partially melted edge.

Candle top and drips

  • The candle top edge was deformed with drag points and magnetism.

  • The drips are cylinders with a partially angled top end and a bulbous, expanded drip at the bottom.

  • Faces were added on the bottom and drag points with magnetism created the bulge.  This is not perfect and another method would be needed if extreme closeups were required.

Melted Wax

  • The melted wax concept is good but this particular object needs some work and I was getting tired of this project.

  • Color 255 255 255, Specular 255 255 255, Hardness 181, Filter 255 255 255, Refraction 1.11

  • One texture - abfakely - start 0.0, end 90, affect reflect, front 0 0 0, side 190 190 190.

Candle Wick

  • This simple object was ridiculously complex to make.   I needed bones to slightly bend the tip.

  • The basic object is a simple closed cylinder with lots of faces.  I mechanically irregularly flared the upper end. Base color 63 63 63.

  • Two textures - RjjLumpbump and fakely.  RJJLP - height 2.25, tc 1.00, bc 0.00, octaves 8.00, dispersion 3.00 frequency 70.0, phase 0.30, turb 0.00, octaves 6.00, scale 45, noise 0.00.

  • Fakely restricted to a subgroup called top.   Affect color, threshhold 0.50, side 58 25 3, front 235 120 16.

Flicker Animation

  • The animation is merely shuffling between 4 shapes.   The default shape as seen above and the three to the right.  One is tapered slightly, while the other two are bent.
