Psychic Powers

Psychic Powers

One of the more curious developments during the Otherspace War was the manifestation of psychic powers. While experiments were conducted in the antebellum Confederacy to determine the authenticity of such abilities, the results invariably came up negative. Only after the onset of the Otherspace War did they occur with a frequency and in a manner that couldn't be so easily dismissed. Many believe this is hardly coincidental and theorized the energies that flooded out of Otherspace somehow affected the mental development of sentients. The more superstitious types believe this to mean that psychics are influenced by the Others, even though they're no more susceptible to becoming Tainted than anyone else.

Though there's widespread belief, the level of skepticism is greater towards psychic powers than magic. This is because magic frequently has a visible effect in normal space and is always detectable from Hyperspace. Neither is the case with psychic powers. This lack of observable evidence has kept psychic powers from being regarded as a real phenomenon by more scientific types.

Psychic powers in Entropy are reflected by the system presented in Shark Bytes #1. Unless otherwise stated below, any of the Edges described may be selected and used as is. The maximum number of psychic Edges which may be taken is the rounded down difference between the character's Spirit and Cyberload. Should the character ever obtain enough cyberware that this difference becomes lower than the current number of psychic Edges possessed, then the appropriate number of Edges must be forfeited.

Psychic Static: The -2 also applies to any Spirit rolls to avoid picking up Taint.

Closed Channeler: Elementals and void spirits may only be contacted with this Edge by their respective Arcane Backgrounds.

Open Channeler: A -2 is applied to the Spirit roll when used with elementals or void spirits as these being aren't as used to dealing with sentients as ghosts and demons are. Any responses from them also tend to be difficult to comprehend. Elementalists and void shamans wouldn't dream of using this Edge on their respective ally spirits and would be horrified at the suggestion.

Psychometry: Using this power on an item which has been tainted in some manner by the denizens of Otherspace forces the psychic to make a Guts roll. It's a straight roll if the taint was from a demon, at -2 if a Blacksoul, and at -4 if by one of the Others.

Telepathic: Should the psychic use this ability on someone who is possessed, he/she must make a Guts roll at -2. Should he/she be stupid enough to use it on a Blacksoul, he/she must make a Spirit roll to avoid picking up a Taint Point.
