BATTLE MODE TRICKS
I. In the battle mode on the Big Donut, if you go behind one of the walls and let go of
the gas
you will start sliding. If you let your player keep sliding they will fall through the
wall and you
will lose a balloon.
II. On double deck in battle mode if you are driving near the wall on the second floor
and you
get hit by a shell you may go over a wall into some drink.
III. On Skyscraper on battle mode If you get a bomb and drop it when you are falling
into a pit
it will miraculously float in mid-air! If you come back to the pit and land on the bomb
you will
pop the other players balloon and not yours.
GET BACK IN THE RACE FAST II
When you get hit by a box bomb or slip on a banana peel or get hit and spin-out to
accelerate
faster tap "A" 3 times and on the third time hold it down. You will accelerate
to "max" speed
quicker than holding down "A".
GET BACK IN THE RACE FAST:
When you fall off the edge and the little guy picks you up and the screen will go black.
As soon
as the screen starts coming back count - 1 thousand, 2 thousand, 3 thousand. Now pull your
trigger and you should regain most of your speed. If you don't like counting wait until
kart is
about 2-3 tires above the ground then pull the trigger. This could help save you 2-4
seconds.
STAY BEHIND, GET AHEAD:
When driving, if you can get directly behind a racer for a short time, you'll see air come
off of both sides
of your kart (like when you go off a ramp), and you'll get a short outburst of speed, not
much, but enough
to pass whom-ever is in front of you.
JUMPING START:
This trick will help you when you start the race. If you start 3rd or below you can jump
over
your fellow racers. To do this you must continually press the jump button (R) when the
race
starts and you can move. This trick works when you get the speed burst.
In block fort don't play near a wall or you'll get pushed in a secert
lake. Submitted by DJ-98@webtv.net
WORRY:
When you hit a banana and are about to spin out hit your brake and your little racer will
whistle...this will
also work in battle mode.
THE THREE CHAMPION GHOSTS:
To access the three secret ghosts you must play the following stages. Luigi Raceway, beat
this course in
under 1:52. Mario's Raceway, beat this one in under 1:30. Last but not least Royal
Raceway, this one
must be beat in under 2:40. If you beat anyone of these times you will get to race the
programmer's of
MK64 best times. (Hint to even get close you must do the powerslide on every turn and even
twice on
some turns). And what great prize will you receive? nothing.
POWER SLIDE:
When you are turning hold the R button then when you wiggle the stick your smoke will
change colors
when it is orange release R for a super boost.
MIRRORED TRACKS:
The first thing you must do get a gold on every race in the 150cc class. After you reset
your machine, the
title screen should have changed (the picture will be different.) Then, go into GP mode
and you will notice
a new option under 150cc. That's an option to race on mirrored tracks! They are NOT
reverse tracks but
mirrored tracks;
they are not the same as the backwards tracks in Wave Race 64. Mirrored means that you're
still going in
the same direction, but the turns are flipped (except the Kinopio Highway board in which
you're racing
against the
traffic.)
SPEED BURST:
As soon as the second light turns off, hit the gas and hold it. You should get a nice
turbo boost! Be
careful, if you hold the button down too soon, you'll spin out instead!
SHORTCUTS AND TIPS
By: James
Luigi Raceway shortcut
After coming out of the tunnel in Luigi Raceway, head toward the part where the gray wall
meets the brick wall off to your left. Look for the fourth brick from the left, and use a
mushroom to blast toward it (right behind a tree). Now jump with the R button as soon as
you
hit the wall. If all goes well, you'll jump over the wall and skip the final curve of the
course,
saving you some precious seconds. Note: This trick is hard to do consistently.
If you're having difficulties with this one, you're not alone. It took me about two hours
to find
the right location and to get this shortcut to work the first time, but now I can do it at
least on a
semi-regular basis. Good luck with this one.
- Try using a mushroom to cut into the grass on the inside of the big corners and power
sliding
out.
- Just do lots of turbo power slides. You can do 5 or more on either of the long turns.
- If you're playing in the GP mode, there's a balloon floating up and down just after
the first set
of item boxes. If it's close to the ground as you approach, hop up with the R button and
grab
the attached item box. It's a spiked shell every time.
Moo Moo Farm
- There doesn't seem to be anywhere particularly useful for the mushroom. You might
want to
save it in case you get hit by a mole.
- Don't hit the moles!
Koopa Troopa Beach
Shortcuts - 1. This is an obvious one. Jump into the cave using the ramp (you don't
need me to
explain this, do you?). You do not need a mushroom or star to get into the cave. Just hop
with
the R button at the top of the ramp.
2. If, for some reason, you don't feel like using the cave shortcut, there's another
route that
can cut your time. Instead of turning left towards the set of three jumps and the cave,
continue
straight ahead. There's a thin section of the beach that you can drive on, with water on
both
sides. Just watch out for crabs.
Kalimari Desert
- If you have a mushroom, either use it to beat the train, or take the shortcut.
Shortcut - After the second set of train tracks, turn sharply left and use a mushroom
or two,
then turbo slide back onto the track.
Toad's Turnpike
Shortcut - Of all shortcuts in the game this one is by far the most difficult one to
do. Select any
driver and make sure to have the map selected on your screen. Drive along the regular
course
until you come to the part where the map overlaps itself. Now make a sharp 90 degree turn
to
the right, and head for the guardrail, but keep jumping with the R button until your kart
lands
on top of the guardrail. At this point Lakitu will tow you back onto the course as usual.
As soon
as Lakitu sets you down, hold both the A and B buttons down and hold the analog stick to
the
right, so that your driver will do a spin turn. Do the spin turn until your kart is facing
90
degrees to the right, and release the analog stick and the B button. At this point, you
will see
your kart driver from a profile view. Now jump with the R button before you make contact
with
the guardrail. If all goes well, you will jump through the wall and off the course into a
lake.
Depending on where you land, Lakitu may tow you onto a later section of the course! If you
don't end up going through the wall and end up on the guardrail instead, then repeat the
process beginning with the spin turn to right. You should eventually get this to work, but
it
takes a LOT of practice. Lakitu always tows you to whichever part of the track is closest,
so
make sure to aim for someplace near the later section of the track. If your jump is really
precise, you may end up landing on the track below instead of in the water. Sometimes
Lakitu
will tow you ahead even if you just land on the guardrail, but this is quite rare. Don't
be
surprised if it takes a long time before you get it to work the first time. It is possible
to get this
trick to work on a semi-regular basis if you are really good at it.
Choco Mountain
Shortcut - Drive through Choco Mountain as usual until you come to the part where you
can
see the overpass on your left. In the time trial mode you can see a guardrail to your
left. Go to
the part just before it starts going downhill and then turn 90 degrees to your left. Drive
into the
wall and press the R button to jump at about the moment you hit it, and you will jump
right over
the wall! You will not only save some precious seconds but also avoid the risk of becoming
a
smear on the road by one of those boulders.
Frappe Snowland
Shortcut - At the very end of the course drive across the bridge, but do not touch any
part of
the track between the bridge and the finish line. Instead, veer off to the right after you
reach
the end of the bridge and drive off the course into the snow until you reach the finish
line. At
this point, drive further off the course so that Lakitu will pick you up. If everything is
done
correctly, Lakitu will tow you back to the bridge, and you will skip an entire lap! If you
do this
on all three laps (go backwards in the first lap), your score can be reduced to roughly
one third
of any normal score.
Mario Raceway
Shortcuts - 1. This isn't really much of a shortcut, it's just an effective way to use
a mushroom.
Use your mushroom to cut through the grass & sand on the last turn before the big
pipe.
2. This is a difficult but very useful shortcut, which can cut 8 or 9 seconds off your
lap times,
and nearly half a minute overall. Here's what you have to do: On the first straightaway
(between the first two left turns), do a turbo power slide to the left and drive up the
hill. When
you reach the curve in the road, turn sharply right, use a mushroom, and hit R just as
you're
about to leave the right side of the track. If you've done everything right, your kart
will clear
the wall, and you'll land on the right side of the track just before the big pipe.
Wario Stadium
Shortcuts - Many people know about one of the shortcuts, but not everyone knows that
there
are actually two shortcuts. The first one is very easy: just drive on top of any of the
first four
small hills and drive directly into the wall on your left. Just before you hit the wall,
press the R
button to jump over the wall and you will be halfway around the track. The next step is
very
tricky and will require a lot of practice. Head back toward the wall which you just jumped
over,
but look at the part where the finish line is. Drive at full speed toward the spot where
the finish
line intersects the wall, and jump just before you hit the wall. If your timing is right,
you will
jump over the wall. Be sure that you land behind the finish line, or the trick won't work.
Now
drive past the finish line to get a very fast lap. If you manage to take both shortcuts on
all three
laps, you can finish the entire course in less than half a minute. It is possible to do
both
shortcuts without using any mushrooms.
Sherbet Land
- Do a bunch of turbo power turns inside the cave, and do your best to avoid all the penguins.
- Stay to the left throughout the entire cave. Take every pillar on the left. This is a
bit more
difficult than taking the outside route but it is much faster.
Royal Raceway
Shortcuts - A useful but very tough shortcut: use a mushroom at the top of the jump,
and turn
left to end up right near the finish line. This is possible, but it's extremely difficult.
- If you have mushrooms, then you can skip a large portion of the course. At the start
of the
course, drive past the first few turns, and drive roughly halfway across the stretch of
track
which is parallel to the stream of water (after the first right turn). At this point, turn
90 degrees
to the left, use a mushroom, and press the R button to try to jump over the water. You
will hit
the land on the other side and fall into the water. If this is done in the right place,
Lakitu will
tow you onto the ramp itself, and you'll skip a significant portion of the course.
Bowser's Castle
- Don't run into the Thwomps. :)
- The best idea for the Thwomp rooms at the beginning of the race is probably to take
both
rooms close to the left wall. This makes it much easier to avoid the Thwomps in the second
room.
D.K.'s Jungle Parkway
- There are a few tricks on this track that don't really count a shortcuts:
- As you leave the jump, turn left. You'll land a little further down the track than
normal. Be
careful not to turn too far, or you'll end up in the water.
- When you enter the cave, follow the path for just a bit, and then turn to the left
and use a
mushroom. You can climb up the steep part of the cave instead of taking the path around
it.
- Also, there's an island in the river right in line with the jump. You can hop onto
the island
from the beach, but I don't know if you can continue to the other side of the river.
Shortcut - At the beginning of the course, go backwards to get into the cave, and then
start
heading back in the right direction until you approach the very end of the cave. Drive
straight
into the part where the left wall of the cave meets the ground and jump with the R button.
If
you did it correctly, you will fall off the course and land in some hidden lake. If you
did this with
the correct angle, Lakitu will put you back into the cave, but you will have skipped
almost an
entire lap. If the angle is wrong, Lakitu will not place you inside the cave, so you may
need to
keep trying the trick until you've figured out precisely which angle you should use before
you
jump off the course. I have found out that it is possible to land inside the cave instead
of the
water, but you have to land at the rightmost edge of the cave to pull that one off. It is
possible
to achieve scores which are less than a minute if you do this on every lap.
Yoshi Valley
Shortcut - This is a nice little shortcut that doesn't require any special items or
anything. Just
after the maze part of the track, there's a straightaway leading up to a hard left turn
and another
straightaway. If you look on the course map, you'll see that the two straight-aways bend
close
together. You can just hop across. So, on the first straightaway, stay to the right of the
track
until the fence ends, then turn sharply left and hop. Shortcut - First picture an
imaginary line
extended from the finish line out to the left and look at the spot where this line meets
with
another section of track (it's right about where the guardrail ends). This is the spot you
will
want to aim for. At the start of the course, go straight forward just a little bit until
the very first
tree on the left is directly to your left. Now turn left so that you are facing the spot
mentioned
above. These locations are only approximate, but with lots of practice you'll figure it
out. Now
use a mushroom and jump (with R) just before you start to go down the steep hill. If
everything
is done correctly, you will jump over the fence and hit the side of the remote track, and
fall
down into the valley. At this point, Lakitu will tow you back to the finish line. If
everything is
done with perfect precision, you will skip an entire lap! Don't expect this to work the
first time
you try it. With lots of practice, you can get a lap score in less than 10 seconds.
Banshee Boardwalk
- The only thing I'll say about this is that you should start your turns a little
earlier than normal,
as this track is very thin in places.
- The only other thing I'll say is that you can go on the left of the first big post in
the building,
but you have to hop over some empty space.
Rainbow Road
Shortcut - Here's a shortcut that will take whole minutes off your time. Right at the
start of the
race, there's a long downhill section of the track. Just as you start down this slope,
turn hard to
the left and hop over the fence. If you have the angle right, you should land almost
halfway up
the track. Make sure you hold the brakes as you're falling, or else your momentum will
bounce
you off the other side of the track.
