Setting of Bubblegum Crossfire |
The year is 2033. The place is Neo-Angeles.
Bought down from any semblance of glory, the city of Los Angeles was a placed to be ashamed of in the early 2020s. When rocked almost to the ground by the 2026 earthquake, many saw this as a great blessing. The rapid redevlopement and rebuilding of the late 2020s were to lead to a shining example for cities of the future.
But it was not to be. The newly arrived Genom corporation footed most of the construction for the new city, in the process insinuating themselves inextricably in its developement. Now at the head of Neo-Angeles in all but name, Genom feels that the city is theirs to do with as they please. Powerfull connections within the city offices and carefull installation of Genom-controlled figures means that the corporation can do as they please within the city, without fear of retribution.
Into the midst of their new city, Genom bought their army of boomers. But with boomers comes violence, and so, following other cities throughout the globe, a special unit of the Neo-Angeles police was set up to combat rogue boomers. The Extra Special Weapons Assault Team of Neo-Angeles use high-tech weaponry, armour and powered suits to combat rogue boomers. As these fell more and more behind the newest models of comabt boomers, they began also incorporarting their own special model of boomer into their ranks to fight its brethren. The E-SWAT, rather than being a separate division of police, is constantly under the reigns of the normal police, who are in turn controlled by the city's everpresent masters, Genom.
But now a new hope has arrived. Founded by the Carlisle West, daughter of a murdered research scientist, the Star Angels now make their presence known on the streets of Neo-Angeles. Using ultra-high technology from an unknown source, they battle Genom and their boomers, determined to keep the giant in check.
Timeline
Neo-Angeles
Arising from the devestation of the 2026 earthquake and the squalor of the former city, Neo-Angeles is truly a city of the future. Very few other places in the world can claim the high level of technological integration into the modern lifestyle as Neo-Angeles. Solar collectors adorn rooftops around the city. Elevated maglev lines run rings around the ground traffic. Commercial aircraft and tiltrotors buzz across the sky. Neo-Angeles is truly a living city. But hardly a safe one. From the shadows, organised crime groups find more and more ways to evade notice and ply their trades. Petty criminals and gangs now have new oportunities, with boomers easily stolen and sold to one of the many illegal recycling shops. And above it all, a monolith to all that the city is today, rises the Genom tower. The City of Angels is gone. Welcome to the New Angels.
Places of interest:Genom Tower: From anywhere in the city, this eyesore is clearly visible. It towers over all other structures, a clear symbol of Genom's power in Neo-Angeles. The tower began construction in 2026, on land bought before the earthquake. The tower is complete in 2033, rising a full kilometer above the ground level, making it the largest Genom tower, equalling the corporation's Megatokyo headquarters. As well as offices and limited production facilities, the tower also houses executive suites for some of the highest ranking executives in Neo-Angeles. The tower also extends several levels underground, housing its own research facilites, as well as an infirmary.
Genom Research Center: In addition to the dominating tower, Genom have also established a high-tech research center in Neo-Angeles. From the outside it seems to be a perfectly elegant office building, with a large statue of a boomer holding up the world out the front. Inside, the GRC is more like a fortress. Security cameras watch all the passageways, blast doors can slide down in an instant to block off intruders and security boomers patrol the center in disguise. The building houses some of Genom's highest tech equipment. This is the working ground of Gillian Greaves, head of Neo-Angeles R&D and one of Genom's greatest boomer scientists.
Northern Armorwerks: A massive and complex facility incorporting a small number of individual structures located a fair distance out of town. This serves as the head office and a limited manufacturing area for the powerful Northern Armorwerks corporation, as well as testing area for prototypes produced at the plant.
USSD Regional HQ: Located within the city of Neo-Angeles, USSD's regional center is nevertheless very strongly guarded and fortified, even guarded by two USSD K-12 battlesuits. Little is known aboiut the goings-on within this building; it is rumoured that they are working on an alternative targeting system to the Killer Doll.
Dreamworld building: A multi-story building in the downtown area, this place is famous for being the center of high-tech entertainment in Neo-Angeles. Its ground floor houses massive arcades of the latest video games, as well as various fast food outlets. This floor is always loud, busy and exciting. Due to a number of muggings, security roams the arcades. Rather than turn away the patrons, the added safety has only increased the patronage. The 1st floor continues on a more sedate pace. This level of the building is home to the latest technology in virtual reality games. Gone are the days of the simple helmet mounted display, this floor's equipment includes full sensory skinsuits, immersion tanks, cockpit-style simulators geared up for the latest military hardware and fancies of the future and even a limited number of Psychic Brain Trip sytems, geared down in an effort to prevent side effects and with a legal waiver for all clients just in case. The second through to fourth floors are concerned entirely with power management and administration duties. The fith floor of the Dreamworld building houses two fine restaraunts, proud in their reputation to serve any kind of meal. These overlook an enclosed area that houses an elaborate warfare simulation game that involves holographic sky displays, authenticly wrecked terrain and paintball weapons. The holograpohic screens are designed to block all distractions out while letting patrons in the restaraunt look in; watching the battles is almost as popular as playing them. The restaraunts are also a favourite place for the aftermath of these simulated fights, as the losers are forced to pay for dinner.
The sixth floor is solely comprised of the penthouse apartment of the building's owner, Carlisle West, who lives off its massive revenue. It also houses the meeting place and headquarters of the Star Angels. The penthouse apartment houses their meeting rooms as well as computer and communications centers. There are also elevators to the secret basement, housing the Star Angels' mecha bays, workshops, a small medical suite and virtual reality training equipment developed from the technology in the building. The basement has access eways leading to street level in the alleyway behind the Dreamworld building assuring the Star Angel's secrecy.
Zone 7: A popular and well known nightclub that employs a number of boomer waitresses and a boomer barmaid, Zone 7 is a favourite for people from all walks of life. Located near the center of the city, it is almost always full from opening time at noon. It is constructed on three levels; the ground floor is solely occupied by a large dance floor. The second floor, more of a tier surrounding the dance floor incorporates the stage, extensive bar, and many booths. The third floor is a catwalk-style railing around the edges and over the center of the room. The stage often features some of the city's newest hopefulls; some make it to the big time and others vanish into obscurity. The bar proudly claims to have every kind of drink available, and the top floor makes an excellent meeting place for those who want to remain unnoticed.
Long Run: A comparatively more sedate and upmarket bar, Long Run has a reputation for being 'a gentlemanly place' with a clean and elegant atmosphere. It has a strict 'no boomers' policy meaninjg that not only do they not employ boomers but patrons are not even allowed to bring boomers inside. It is known to be a strong Yakuza holding, and a place where policemen fear to tread.
Pacific City: "In the future annals of America, Pacific City will shine out as a beacon in any darkness that may come." These lofty words were spoken by President James K. Mitchell, shortly before losing office. Pacific City has, however, continued construction in his absence. It is a truly ambitious project; to build a new off-shore city linked to Neo-Angeles. The city will incorporate extensive commercial and industrial areas, and rate (hopefully) as the most high-tech construction ever. Theory aside, Pacific City is actually approaching completion, although it is not as magnificent as expected. It will eventually link Neo-angeles and the off-shore spaceport, while also providing a way to clear the cluttered streets.
Neo-Angeles Spaceport: Located on the site of the old Catalina airport, the new spaceport is titanic in size. Apart for runways for inbound and outbound passengers and cargo, the whole 'port is dedicated solely to spacebound flights. This is the main supply station for the titanic SDPC-2, and as such is roaringly busy. Security is greatly overworked here, and a fair deal of contraband manages to slip past every day, leading to a good trade in illegal items and substances to SDPC-2 and the moonbase.
Neo-Angeles international airport: Bigger and better than the old LA international, this airport is home to all kinds of traffic, including having a large number of strips for private jets, some of which are even personally reserved. Security is always tight here and the customs procedures are nightmarish. It is simply far easier to carry out smuggling at...
Warehouse and Dockside District: Located by the bay, this areas is a haven for the worst types of criminals. Smuggling of epic proportions is carried out usually between the city and the spaceport, leading to a roaring trade in all kinds of contraband up to nearby SDPC-2. Although a solid effort is made towards security, the rates of crime are simply staggering.
