You're Too Late

A week had passed since Joey had gotten the package from Marleny. He thought about her constantly after that. Every little thing he did reminded him of her. Then one day, he went for a drive, and as he drove by the park, he saw a young couple, pushing a stroller holding a pair of twins in it. He smiled ruefully. She always wanted to have twins. A boy and a girl. Nicholas and Jordan. He kept driving until he started to notice the neighborhood. He knew where his heart was taking him. He was about to pull up, when he noticed a Blazer that shouldn't have been there in the driveway. He parked across the street and walked up the driveway. He ran a hand through his hair, and knocked on the door. A giggling Marleny answered the door.

"Hello?" She said then realized who it was. She had one hand on the door to keep it from going anywhere. She looked surprised. Joey was about to say something when he saw a pair of hands snake around her waist.

"Hey baby, who's at the door?" A deep voice asked behind her. Joey saw a head peek around Marleny's and swallowed hard.

"It's an old friend. Go finish lunch, I'll be right there." She said to him. The guy then kissed her cheek and walked to the kitchen. Joey watched as he walked to the place where he used to cook them breakfast and she would make them her special coffee. He longed for those days again.

"What do you want?" She asked impatiently. He was taken aback by her tone. He looked into her eyes and saw how she was trying to be tough, but he was how hard it was for her.

"I just wanted to see how you were. I was just in the neighborhood and I wanted to drop by." He said to her. He looked inside and saw the rearranged furniture.

"Yeah well I'm fine. We've been fine." She noticed him checking out the guy who took his place. "His name is Jay." She said quietly. Joey looked back at her, hurt running through his facial features.

"Listen Joey," She started. This was gonna be harder then she thought. "I'm kinda busy and I've got things to do." She said putting her left hand behind her head as she scratched it for a second. He nodded and was about to turn away to leave when he saw something glint in the corney of his eye. He looked to her left hand and saw the ring on her finger. He looked up into her eyes and she looked into his. They stood there for a minute, emotions running through the both of them. Then Jay came back over and kissed her forehead.

"Lunch is ready babe." He told her and then walked back in the house. Marleny just looked at Joey again before following Jay inside the hosue and closing the door. Joey took a step back and turned around and walked back to his car. He drove home all the way thinking, what would've happened if... He kept thinking, his imagination running wild. He only knew one thing for sure though. He was too late.
