Perfect Dark

No, its not the sequel to Goldeneye 007, and not even a James Bond game, but Perfect Dark certainly looks like the game to dethrone Goldeneye 007 as the premiere first-person shooter for the N64. Perfect Dark is being developed at Rare by the same team that made Goldeneye, and so far their progress has been nothing but astounding.

The game uses a vastly improved version of the Goldeneye engine, now with support for real-time raytracing, advanced lighting effects, a more responsive AI, and an arsenal of futuristic weapons. For Goldeneye veterans, Perfect Dark will be an easy transition, as it uses the same control style. Perfect Dark introduces a new level of interactivity with the environment as well. You can push and pull objects, and even blow holes in walls. Perfect Dark will include a number of vehicles to use, including an anti-gravity speeder bike.

The game will, of course, contain a 4-player multiplayer mode. Details of what kinds of options will be available have not yet been released. Judging from Goldeneye, though, one can certainly assume that Perfect Dark will become one of the great multiplayer titles for N64.

The Story? Oh yeah, I almost forgot. You play the game as Joanna Dark, a special agent sent to investigate the DataDyne corporation, which, as it turns out, is hiding extraterrestrials. Like Goldeneye, mission objectives will vary, rarely including "kill everything."

Rare's reputation and the success of Goldeneye leave Perfect Dark with big shoes to fill. Nonetheless, it is relatively safe to say that Perfect Dark will be nothing short of spectacular when it hits the streets late this year.
