Colony Wars is every Sci-Fi shooter's
dream. You play as a member of the Alliance who is at war with
the evil Earth Empire. With 70 missions spanning over two discs,
Colony Wars easily provides months of gameplay. Colony Wars combines
unbelievable graphics, fantastic sound, and cinematic CGI rendered
sequences to create a gaming experience like no other.
Colony Wars has graphics that would
even put the N64 to shame. Awsome lighting and transparancy effects
light up the dark void that is space. There are plenty of planets,
warp holes, and jump gates to fill up the vaccum of space and keep
the visuals interesting. The ships themselves are gigantic and make
the death star look like a metal marble. One visual aspect of this
game that really makes it stand out is the sensation of speed that is
often lacking from space shooters.
Presented in Dolby Surround Sound,
the sound rocks and fits Colony Wars' wicked action. Channel the
audio through a sound system with a sub-woofer and you may have to
pause the game several times for an underwear change. The sound of
the enormous ships exploding is simply awsome, and frighting at the
same time. The music is beatifully orchestrated, but unfortunately
the sound effects over power the music, making it almost
in-audible.
The realistic controls require some
getting used to. I highly suggest utilizing the training missions
before actually starting the game. The 3D map is cool, but it also
takes some getting used to. Hitting enemy fighters can be a little
difficult, you have to shoot your laser where it is going to be, not
where it currently is.
Colony Wars is a must buy for all
fans of the genre. Naming any of the minor flaws in this game would
just be nit picking. The only people who wouldn't love this game are
people who just want to blow stuff up, and refuse to have any kind of
method to their actions. But be warned, this game is no cake
walk.
