EA Sports' newest racer on the block
is NASCAR '98. NASCAR '98 is developed by the same minds that
developed the incredibly fun Andretti Racing, and it shows. This game
will mostly impress NASCAR fans because it boasts most of the real
tracks and drivers of the NASCAR circuit. Each of the cars has the
same sponsors it does in real life, although the beer and cigarette
sponsors are absent from the game. But you don't have to be a NASCAR
fan to enjoy this game. The intro which features FMV of real races is
cool, and Bob Jenkins does the hosting and announcing again just like
in Andretti Racing. The game's graphics aren't perfect, the graphics
are plauged with some pop-up problems. But some cool little effects
boost this game's graphics beyond average. First of all there is a
line on the track created by rubber from the tires of the cars called
the "groove", this points out the best path around the track. Other
neat little effects are skid marks that stay through the entire race,
emergency vehicles on the track while you are racing, and nasty
wrecks. The real impressive part of this game's graphics is the frame
rate, many cars can be on the screen at once with no slowdown, even
in two player mode. The sound is the only low point of the game. The
engine sounds get the job done, but the crash sounds are weak. The
music also isn't too great. The idea of having classic southern rock
was good, but they have all of two music tracks and they get real
annoying real fast, so I suggest turning the CD music down in the
options menu and listening to one of your own CD's. Overall this game
is about close racing action. It seems you are almost always swaping
paint with another car, which makes the game extremely fun to play.
This game is not without it's faults, but it is a worthy addition to
any PlayStation racer's game library, especialy a NASCAR fan's.
