The newest addition to
the Street Fighter series is in 3D! Finally! But don't be scared away
from this game Street Fighter purists, this game isn't really 3D,
just the characters are. EX has the 8 original characters and 12 new
characters, which brings the fighter count to a total of 23 including
bosses and hidden characters. Despite the obviously mandatory
lengthy name, this game packs the potential to become a fighting game
classic.
The Street Fighter Characters were converted into
3D very well, some characters look even better in 3D. The most
impressive part of EX's graphics is the incredible frame rate. The
game's graphics rip with no break-up and speed which has to be seen
to be believed. This is definetly the fastest 3D fighter I have ever
seen. The only flaw in the graphics is the 2D backgrounds don't
really blend well with the foreground, but you don't really notice it
in the heat of battle. The new transparancy effects in the fireballs
and such also put nice touches on the graphics.
The sound is nice and fits the game. The cracks
and smacks convey the hits well, and the ha-doken! and all-you-can!
expressions are clear as a bell. The music is primarly fast, rock
riffs, but when you get to some stages, the music doesn't really fit.
Guile's stage features elevator music, and Sakura's stage's music
sounds like Kenny G.
The controls are very fast and responsive.
Controlling a game of this speed takes lots of accurate contols, and
EX has them in spades. Pulling off fireballs and such is easy, the
only problem is that there are too many Ken and Ryu clones who have
the same exact special moves. This is the kind of game where you
don't have to know the moves to win, but it is a definite
advantage.
This is one of the top fighters of 1997 hands
down. If you are a classic Street Fighter fan and don't want to play
this game because it is 3D, get over it, it isn't really 3D. If you
are like me and didn't really like the Alpha games, this one is a
little more like the originals. You're missing out on a great
fighting game if you don't own Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha.
