I fly using the nickname raxx and at present I'm the chief mechanic, bottle washer, runway sweeper and defender of the sheep.  You'll find me in the air on weeknights around 9pm NZ time and in the weekends any time after I wake up, (2pm onwards).

Unlike the real RNZAF which is looking to sell off it's fast attack wing and redeploy it's pilots, the RNZAF squadron in Aces High continues to fullfill the roles and traditions created by our parents and grandparents in World War Two.  As needs dictate the pilots in the Skyrats can fly fighters, bombers or capture fields with the troop transporters.  With the constant changes in the arena the tactical role of all pilots is tested to its limits and can mean changes in plans from one minute to the next.

I have created a series of  Aces High maps here so that pilots have an easier time of navigating the arena and selecting targets for the bombers.

Changes have been coming thick and fast over the last few months. So fast in fact that I haven't had the time to update this web site. There has been a terrain editor released and I was only of six people selected to test and document it in the closed beta test. This was the main reason I haven't been flying online much in the last few months. In the meantime there have been 2 new versions, (1.03 and 1.04), which have included several new aircraft and vehicles, (A6M5 "Zero", Typhoon, M16 Half Track, FW190-A5, Lancaster, Ju-88 and the Ostwind 37mm AAA tank). Updates to the flight model have also been made.

At version 1.01 in Aces High there are 12 Aircraft, (2 Bombers, 9 Fighters and 1 Troop Transporter).

The Bombers are the B17G Flying Fortress and the B26 Liberator.  There is no automatic gunner, (referred to as "otto" in Warbirds), in the bombers so you can either man the guns yourself or you can have another player join you in flight and take over the gunners role.  Joining in flight means that gunners don't have to stay with the plane for half an hour as it grabs altitude behind the lines.  The rumours in the wind say that the next bomber to be released will be the Lancaster.

The Troop Transporter is a C47 Douglas Dakota and it carries ten paratroopers to capture enemy fields.  Winning the was is achieved by reducing a country down to it's last field.  The bombers blow up Anti-Aircraft Artilliary, (AAA), at the airfields and while the fighters attack anyone taking off to defend the field as the C47 has to sneak in and unload the paratroops.  The paratroops capture the airfield by entering the map room and blowing it up.

There are nine fighter aircraft currently in Aces High.
The German aircraft are the  Messerschmit 109, (variants including the 109F, G2, G6 and G10), and the Foke-Wulf 190, (the A8 variant with the A5 to be released soon).  The german aicraft have a variety of different weapons loadouts from 20mm and 30mm nose cannons to extra 20mm and 30mm gundolas in wing pods, (this totals 13 different variants and gun loadouts).
There is an Italian fighter the C-205.  This fighter is as good as the German 109's but didn't see much service during the war because it took so long to build, (the Bf109 took 1900 man hours to produce while the C-205 took nearly 22,000!).  The C-202 is coming in the near future.
The British are represented with two variants of the Spitfire, (the Mark IX and the Mark V).  Both suffer from small ammunition loads but you have a choise in the Mark IX of a pair of .50cal machine guns to replace the four .303 Browning machine guns.  Manoeverability of both planes allows you to get in really close and save ammunition for the killing shot with the 20mm cannon that are standard in both planes.
The USA is represented with the P51 Mustang, (and a choise of four or six .50calibre machine guns), the F4U Corsair, (the -1D with six .50 Calibre machine guns or the -1C with four 20mm cannon), and the P38L Lightning.  All US aircraft have a choise of bomb, rocket and drop tank combinations.
Japan only has the N1K1, (George), representing it in Aces High.  The N1K1 is a much lighter and less arnoured plane than it's contemporaries.  It is the fastest turning plane in Aces High and armed with four 20mm cannon it packs a nasty punch as well.  It accelerates quickly and in a short sprint can catch a P51 Mustang at low level.
Lastly is the Russian LA-5FN.  Armed with two 20mm cannon in the nose this has been the deadliest plane in the Arena mainly because the few pilots that can fly it well are aware of it's limitations.

The Typhoon has been unleashed in version 1.02.  Also released are the Panzer IV and an M16 Halftrack, (with quad .50cal machine guns for anti aircraft duties)
