Now here's a bit of Runyard History... I was lucky enough to see this castle in person
when I was 12 years old, some 30 years ago. I remember the huge lawns ( grounds ) that were neatly trimmed and the burned out interior of
the castle with a large metal boiler / watertank still standing on it's
burned out roof. I also saw the house my Great Great Grandfather
( Austin 1831-1904 ) was born in not very far from here. |

Built as a hunting lodge in 1608. The castle was bought by the Weld family in 1641. Sadly the castle burned 1929. With agriculture in depression and the high cost of death duties in 1925, 1928 & 1935, the building had wait for 50 years before any restoration work was possible. In 1994, the castle was partially opened providing access the the southwest tower. In 1998, the castle was fully opened to the public. |
Lulworth Castle today, is being restored.
So far, part of the lower exterior and first floors have been restored.
You may take tours up into one of the towers.
Open Sunday to Friday.
