The Borderlord
A fighter/mage/thief kit
by Brjánn Jónasson
Description: A Borderlord is a bit of a rare bird. He is the lone elf patrolling the borders of the ancient elven kingdoms, ready to report on any threat to the nation. Only elves can become Borderlords, for the simple reason that this is a Fighter/Mage/Thief kit specially designed for the elven race.
To be a Borderlord an elf must first be a F/M/T and have the minimum statistics: Str 13, D 16, C 11, I 14 and W 11. As can be seen, the requirements are almost as great as those of the Ranger class, as Borderlords have much in common with these loners.
Preferred Schools: There are no preferred schools, but most specialist Borderlords take the Enchantment/Charm or Alteration schools.
Barred Schools: There are no barred schools except for Necromancy. There are, however, very few Invoker or Diviner Borderlords.
Role: Borderlords live their lives much like the rangers. They stay out in nature and patrol the outskirts of the elven lands they have sworn to protect. They serf not only as scouts, they are master snipers, and all enchant arrows with various spells devised by retired Borderlords.
Secondary Skills: Bowyer/Fletcher, Forester, Hunter or any wilderness oriented.
Weapon Proficiencies:
- Bonus: Like the War Wizards, all Borderlords get a free proficiency in the Longbow and Longsword.
- Recommended: Any blades, Shorbow, Staff, Net, Lasso.
Nonweapon Proficiencies:
- Bonus: Agility Casting, Bowyer/Fletcher, Survival (Forest), Tracking.
- Recommended: Alertness, Direction Sense, Hiding, Hunting, Rope Use, Set Snares, Spellcraft.
Equipment: All Borderlords start out with a longbow, a longsword and a quiver of 24 flight arrows.
Special Benefits:
- Because of their intense training with the longbow, the Borderlords get a +1 to hit and damage whenever they employ longbows.
- When in wilderness the Borderlord gets a +15% bonus to Move Silently and Hide in Shadows. Furthermore, they get a +5% bonus to Climb Walls if they are climbing a tree, a cliff, or anything natural.
- Borderlords are well wersed in using the Find/Remove Traps to find and remove snares, log traps, and other "natural traps". When they attempt to find or remove these traps they are at +25%. Furthermore, they can use this skill to make "natural" traps of their own by making two successful checks (one to make the trap and one to hide it).
Special Hinderences:
- Because of their intensive training with bows Borderlords will never learn how to use crossbows, slings, staffslings, blowpipes, and other such like missile weapons.
- When within the land the Borderlord has sworn to protect, the Borderlord will never use fire or lightning magic that has any chance of ignitating the forest.
- Borderlords receive a -15% to the Pick Pockets and Open Locks skills, and they can never use the Read Languages skill (they are simply always on the move). Also, they receive a -5% penalty to use all other thief skills when in a city.
- Borderlords can attempt to use the Find/Remove Traps on "non-natural" traps, but do so at -25%
Wealth Options: Borderlords receive 5d4 x 10 gp in addition to the longbow, longsword and a quiver of arrows.
Races: Only elves can become Borderlords. Drow and aquatic elves probably have something similar patroling their borders, but they can not take this kit.
