Infantry are the cheapest unit to buy and the pride of some countries such as USSR. Because infantry are so cheap, they can be bought in great numbers and provide an excellent defense web. Don't forget that on defense, infantry will do just as well as those expensive tanks. In battleship mode, infantry can be very useful in stalling another player while you concentrate on what you need to do. Let's say that you are Russia. A good strategy, if Russia is concentrating on Germany, is to place a few infantry on each of the eastern and southern territories so that it will take Japan a few turns to reach the capital. Hopefully by then you might have taken over Germany and then can concentrate on defending against Japan.
Infantry can also be used in attacking very succesfully. I almost flip out when I see my teammates attacking with tanks only. I say you should always attack with a few infantry, 5 is always a good number, so they can take the hits, and not your expensive tanks and fighters. Also, if you happen to take a territory with just tanks, you are basically up a river without a paddle, because all the other player has to do is attack that territory and cost you a lot of money. Tanks aren't that cheap folks! |

OOOOHH, TANKS. For some reason, there is nothing more satisfying to me that rolling into another player's territory with a tall stack of tanks. For countries like Germany and Russia, these will be the main attacking force when using a conventional strategy. Along with infantry, tanks form one of the most formidable attacking forces. They do not cost you an arm and a leg but they attack pretty well. Just make sure you don't buy tanks for defense. That is STUPID. But you don't have to listen to me. The tanks blitzing capabilities really help Germany in its conquest of Africa, and Japan's conquest of the eastern USSR. Tanks usually play the same role in a regular game as they do in a battleship mode game. The nice thing is that the other team can't see how tall that tower of tanks is and they will never know until you kill them with it.

- Get 1 roll at 1 for every plane flying over it. Movement=1 Cost=5
Most of the time, AA Guns are not a very important part of the game, but they can be. In battleship mode, you can move them around undetected. This is very useful if you know somehow that a country is building up a force of fighters or is trigger happy with their industrial bombers. Just move them to where you think that planes are going to fly over and surprise the other player by taking out 3 fighters. You can't base your whole strategy on these of course, but they can help a lot if used strategically.

I love Subs! Submarines can do heavy damage to an enemy fleet when attacking in numbers. The relatively cheap price of these allows this to happen. In battleship mode, however, the enemy can't see the fleet of subs sitting in your country's sea zone, and this can lead to numbers. If you attack with 12 subs, you should get at least 4 hits, and then you can choose to take out two battleships. Lots of money down to the bottom of the sea!
Sneak attacks do work a little differently in battleship mode. For information on how sneak attacks work, see Rules & Suggestions.
As with tanks, I recommend putting subs in a position where they can attack. They attack and defend on the same number, but sneak attacks are so nice for taking out the big ships like destroyers and battleships. Subs are also nice for the poor boys of the game, such as UK when Africa is lost, and the like. You can get a lot of units out at a minimal cost.

Transport are a must if you want to move lots of land units around in order to surprise your opponent. The countries that find these most usefull are America, Japan, and the UK. Some examples are: the US can ship lots of tanks and infantry to the Soviet Far East and lauch an offensive against Japan, the US can support Africa without Germany knowing it, the UK can suddenly launch a huge offensive on Germany's Capitol, Japan can move its land forces quickly enough to defend or attack its northern borders, India, Western US, or even Africa. Transports are kind of expensive so make sure you don't waste all your money on transports. Remember, transports can't attack, and one needs to attack to win. There are a few debates on the role of the transport when stumbling upon another fleet when doing non-combat movement. These are discussed in Rules & Suggestions.
