From the 19th Hole

November 20 1998

Round 12

While the World Cup of Golf was being played in blustery conditions at the Golf Harbour Gold Course, Richard, Brian, Anne and I headed out to Chamberlain Park. As I type this up I am suffereing from a nasty case of sunburn on the back of my neck. Remember that if you're going out in the sun, slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat.

Points about our games.
Well. My driving was spectacular. My putting was, for the most part, complete crud, when it wasn't average. I mentioned a few cards ago that I could tell when a shot was going to be good just by how I was "feeling". Today with one exception, (the 18th), I felt relaxed and so long as I didn't try to force the ball I managed to out-drive everyone. My worst hole was the second bacause I wasn't feeling comfortable and consequently played completely crap shots, (topping the ball off the tee and then down the trees on the right side of the fairway to the green where I three-putted). From the third on it was like I could reach out and direct the ball where I wanted it most of the time.

Richard had a nightmare front nine, (notably the 8th where a great drive was followed by airshots and topped balls on the fairway). Richard has been self analysing his game and believes now that he really should be using a 3 wood off the tee and in the rough a 7 wood or a 9 wood are going to be his best bet. This I think is a load of bollocks and he should concentrate on eliminating his slice and getting a good, solid stance set up. Richard if you read this, GET LESSONS!!!! Seek professional help. All the books and video tapes in the world won't fix your slice but a pro can.

Brian played as well as any of us and apart from the 16th, (where he sliced two balls out of bounds), his game was remarkably even.

Anne surprised me when she said she hadn't played for a few years and while she wasn't lifting the ball very high in the air was still getting good distance with her drives and fairway shots. Anne's Horror Hole was the 15th with her second shot across the water. Have you ever seen the movie called "Tin Cup" with starring Kevin Costner? I can only describe the 15th as Anne's "Tin Cup hole". 6 balls in the drink and I was getting a little concerned untill the seventh bounced off a rock onto the far bank. I was laughing so hard that I couldn't play my own shot for a few minutes. I know it's unkind to laugh but the look of grim determination followed by resignation as each balls dived into the canal was too much to stand.
