Merchant Names: - For a number of reasons, its a good idea to become familiar with the names of the various merchants in the civilized areas of Athas. Some very good maps that list merchant names and where they reside may be found in the library of the TFW... be careful not to disturb them as you skulk about spying out their excellent lore.
1. Deliveries - Draqoman Thrane will give you your first delivery item. Other deliveries require you to purchase the item, then deliver it to the person. Most merchants will offer you a delivery job. The xp and cp are low, and not really worth it, since you can do tavern missions easier.
Its a good idea to accept ONE from a merchant you don't normally interact with, like Tar the halfling, even if you have no intention of getting around to it "right away", or else you will be forever having to listen to folks offer you missions when you want to buy fruit, take caravan rides, etc.
2. Tavern missions - Tavern missions are incredibly boring, but are the quickest way to earn xp up to about level 6 or so. Itoc, Sinifa (the blue Jann weaver), and Ibod will give you 'Tavern' missions after you chat with them (click on 1st line of text). To complete these missions, enter one of the Taverns in SS and wander around until you are told that you found what you were looking for. (It will appear in your inventory when you find it.) Bring the item back to whoever sent you for it and collect your reward. Notice where items are found, since the location ('Sweet Spot') doesn't seem to change.
The best place for tavern missions is from Dariya, at the Full Flagon Inn in Shadow Square, but you'll need to join the VA to get them.
3. Mila's Mystery - Chat with Mila, the owner of the Golden Inix inn, in Caravan Way. (Expensive, but the only place to rest if you don't want to get robbed.) She'll tell you about some mysterious man. Agree to help her. Talk with Jaryx outside the door to see if he knows anything. He'll refer you to Notaku, the fruit vendor in Shadow Square. Notuaku can help you find the stalker, if you are persistent. Talk with the stalker, and report back to Mila for some xp.
4. The lost Kank - Go to the stable. Talk to the Dydrina the Kank Herder, who will eventually ask you to find a lost Kank. Leave Tyr, cast sanctuary, and run like hell to the wastes outside of Alturuk (Defiled). Find the kank in the upper right part of the screen. Look at it, then 'bring it back' to Tyr stables for your reward. This quest is repeatable, but the xp drops pretty quidkly after the first time.
5. Faria's Passages - Get a crowbar, head to lower left corner of SS. Pry open the bars and enter the room. When you enter the grate, take notice of the four numbers engraved (2345, etc.). Then go into the numbered doors in the order of the four numbers you were given at the grate. When you are done, you get some xp and end back in SS. (note:sometimes I have had to enter the last number door twice.....)
6. Under Tyr (aka "Bloodletter Quest")
- Go to Ceramic Merchant and buy the little square key. Go to the headless statue and click the stone key on the square hole in base. Enter UnderTyr.
- Kill spiders until you get 6 spider sacks. Take the sacks to Old Magda near the arena in SS. Trade three for info, then the other three for a key. (Note: Another place spider sacs can be found is in the outdoor lava fields in the new regions west of Tyr.)
- Use this key on the healer's chest in CW. Kill zombies until they give you a key.
- Use this key On door in Golden Inix Inn in CW. Under here, kill sligs til they give up a key.
- Use this small pink key on cabinet in Rainikin's (male tailor) shop in SS. Under here, kill Shadows until they give up a key. Also, killing the skeletons under here or in the next two underground locations may give up halves of a round golden key. You need both halves to finish this quest.
- Use this grey-horixontal key on cabinet in Katjana's (female tailor) shop in SS. Under here, kill Red Slaads for a key. Red slaads can paralyze you, and they regenerate, but are ok xp (3750 xp each). You can buy white grapes from the fruit vendor to protect against the paralysis effect. Ironskin fruit (acorns) are also advisable.
- The blue/grey horizontal key from here is used in the Full Flagon, an open roofed tavern in SS. To use this one, talk to Dariya the inn keeper, ask about the way to under Tyr. Entry will cost you 500cp. When she says ok, use key on open barrel against north wall. Under here, killing skels may also yield golden keys. Once you have both halves, use one and they combine.
- Next go through the rubble in the center left of the screen. If the double doors to the west are already open, turn around and leave --- for the crypt has already been pilfered. If the doors are closed, prepare for battle. Head for the doors, and a bunch of nasty undead revenants will pop up. Kill them or avoid them, then "look" at the double doors and use your gold key to open it. When you enter the apparently empty temple to the north, several obsidian golems will materialize, along with some banshee dwarves. Probably best to use sanctuary to avoid all these folks, if you're low level.
Enter the temple and use the golden key on the stone coffin in the top center of the temple. If the doors were closed, it will give a nice magic item. If they were open, you can still use your key on the coffin, but the prize will be lame and you'll have to kill more undead for the key.
7. Join the Veiled Alliance - Templars suck. Be a VA. (Besides, SOL is supposed to oppose the Templarate on Athas, anyway...) Talk to Chesia (the psionics teacher in CW.) She tells you when you go to leave that she knows of a group who is interested in you. Answer yes, and head for the white, abandoned bath house in the lower right corner of SS. Knock on the door -- Twice, then once. Look at the cabinet in the back and descend into the VA headquarters.
Talk to Matthias, the only NPC down there. He will tell you of a task you must do. Basically, you need to go into the sewers and meet an operative. Note though, that the operative may be standing in Shadow Square, and not in the sewers! Go up to the surface, and look for a half-elf named Holpin in green robes, near the vendors in Shadow Square. If he's there, talk to him, and you're done. Otherwise, to meet this operative, go into Faria's passages and kill stuff and keep exiting door number 8. Eventually, he will appear (you might need to re-enter the sewers a couple times) Talk to him, then go back to Matthias. Congrats.
Now you are VA....make sure to take note of the secret phrase...you'll need it. If you are damaged, don't heal before seeing Mathias again. He will send you for free healing and lodging. Now you can do VA tavern missions from various merchants, once you use the secret phrase. (These merchants are Kalka the Carpenter, Tarill the Jeweler, Dariya in the Full Flagon, and Jaryx the 1/2 Giant at the Golden Inix in CW).
8. Mathias VA mission #1 - Mathias asks you to find a ledger (possibly other item...always been a ledger for me) and bring it to the half giant at the golden Inix. What I do is accept this mission, the go to Itoc. Keep refusing missions until he offers you one with the same item that Mathias sent you for. When you get it, bring it to the giant instead of Itoc. Then go see Mathias for big xp. (You need to have about 30k xp to get this mission.)
9. Mathias VA mission #2 - Mathias sends you to talk to Limas in Defiled (wastes just outside of Alturuk). Stop at Notaku's and get a banana. The go to Defiled and talk to Limas (he's the crazy 1/2ling). Talk about weather, use secret phrase, give him the banana, go back to Mathias for big xp. (You need to have about 80k xp to get this mission.)
10. Mathias VA Mission #3 - Mathias sends you to get an amulet from Clockwork Isle and give it to Aristanphaneles in Alturuk (I'm sure I buthchered his name...the captain in Alt.) See #15 on getting amulets below, give it to the captain, the see Mathias for your reward.
11. Rocks in Defiled - At midnight Athasian time, Limas will drop rocks in Defiled. Whenever you see them, grab three, and walk onto the little blue circles, until you get to an area with a long passage to the left. Keep walking until you see three big stones. Walk into the center of them, listen to the story, get the xp. You can also cart a set of three stones to the second clockwork isle, where a pyreen elder may reward you with a magic item for them.
12. Blue Lotus - Cromlin
- Talk to Traabi the healer in the EC. He will ask you to find a blue lotus. Say you will, then go talk to Pa in the lower right corner of the fields. She will tell you which island to go to. Go to Alturuk, book a skimmer for the island he told you to, then go. You will see a hole in the cliff when you arrive. Go through it, then to the center left of the screen. Pick a blue lotus (it won't show in your inventory). Feel free to beat on the Cyclops here, by the way. Walk around the maze until a Shadowy Figure asks for help. Go talk to the captive. Then look at the circular entrance to the tunnel, hmmm... a circle.... Now, go over to the fire, and get first part of stone circle out of the fire.
Go back to shadow, then get second part of circle out of silt in the southeast part by stacking up Cyclops bodies (this is done automaticly after cyclops are killed). You can achieve the same effect by giving the lotus to the chief cyclops, if you're not tough enough to kill them all. Beware though, the cyclopses get really mean if you poison their leader.
Go back to shadow, go under Cromlin (will give you option when you go to tunnel), kill skel warriors, use lever behind them to turn off the powerfans, then get third stone circle part from northeast pile of garbage. Go back to tunnel entrance, use look icon, put stone circle in place, get your reward from the shadow. Scream if you only got a +1 arrow. Then click on the boat icon to go back to Alturuk. Then see Traabi again. He will reward you with three free healings, and give you xp. Be sure and talk to him again, so you can do the quest in the future. (It resets at randowm times.)
13. Orb/Pirate VA mission - Talk to fortune teller in EC. Tell her you will get the orb. Use a shovel in the most eastern part of the east beach in Alturuk. Bring the orb back to the fortune teller and she will tell your fortune. Then go see Olina, the healer in Alturuk. Talk to her...use the secret phrase. Eventually she will ask you to help her. Tell her yes, then get passage to Balic. On Balic, there are a ton of NPC's. Feel free to talk to any or none of them. Follow the path north, then left. Enter the passage to the cove. Follow the passages along until you come to where you can hear the assassins plotting. Break up the meeting, and kill the three. Go back to Alturuk, talk to the healer, and collect 5000 cp and big xp (10,000 down to 6666). The healer, Olina, will also restore you for half price plus 1 amulet from clock...see #15 to obtain...
13a. Minerva - Go to SS, and buy a bunch of Silt Herb and Berries from the two lower right merchants. These items are stackable, so you can carry a bunch and they will only take up 2 pack spots. Next time you're in Balic, talk to Minerva, near the fire ring. Ask her to make something for you, and for 50 cp, she'll try. (I've been getting a 80% success rate) In your pack, you will find one of the following potions if it is successful: Protection from Fire, Free Action, Cure Light, Cure Serious, or Cure Critical Wounds. Use em, or sell em to Marcus in Alturuk...you can have her make as many as you can carry....
14a. Bandit Mission #1 - Talk to Umlauatus (the widow next to the caravan master), and agree to find her daughter. Then go to wastes past EC area. Walk until you see the bandits. Kill them, then bring the daughter back to the widow in CW for your reward.
14b. Bandit Mission #2 - Talk to Gos (the giant that lives with Larak in Alturuk.) Eventually, he will ask you to help him recover a package stolen by bandits. Again, go to wastes past EC, kill the bandits, and see the giant for your cp and xp.
15. Clockwork Isle - Find Farelli in the EC and do five deliveries for him. Go back and ask for a sixth, and he gives you a special one. He gives you six clues...go look at the following six areas.
- Yellow tuft of grass at south part of fields.
- Water in Dino fountain in CW
- Woodpile in center of spider area of under Tyr.
- Wall in lower left area of Arena entry way near columns.
- Under bed in Alturuk's Captain's quarters.
- Bottom bone at Nomad camp's entryway.
Then go back to Farelli, ask about riddle, then see fortune teller for help. At this point, I can still never really figure out the answer, so I guess. If I'm wrong, say goodbye and try a different one. The right answer will never appear until you talk to the fortune teller however.
Once you get the right answer, you can now book passage to Clockwork, by taking the boat to the isle near Graks' Pool. Once on clock, you'll want to get amulets. Here's how to get them... Enter the hole at the top left of the screen. (PvP is allowed below ground, so be prepared.)
Once you are under, follow the hall to the lower right. You will enter rooms at random, and these rooms are trapped. To avoid traps, only use east exits when you enter a room from the north or south and HUG THE WALL as tight as possible. If you enter from the west, or there is no east exit, just leave the way you came in. Eventually, you will get to a room with a big bone pile, and two gulguthra (otyughs, garbage beasties, etc.) Kill em, get xp, then get the amulet out of the bone pile. Now to leave, use north exits, and only if you enter the room from the south or the east....again hugging the wall and leaving the same way you came in if not from east or south or if there is no north exit...eventually you come to the entry room.
Monsters below ground include Feyrs, Umber hulks, and Babaus...the babaus corrode armor, the Hulks cause confusion, and the Feyrs cause fear...so prep accordingly (cloak of bravery, gaze reflection) Leave clock by clicking on the dingy.
To get the second amulet, do the same thing, only instead of a bone room, you come to a room seemingly full of lazers. Make sure all the machines in the room are repaired, then just walk to the amulet and pick it up.
Use same procedure to get to third room, where you interupt a cultist leader, 4 cultists, and 2 aurumvoraxes. Its a VERY good idea to have sanctuary active when you are looking for the third amulet, as the cultists are vicious, and are fond of dispelling away all your nice prep spells. Kill 'em all, then go to southeastern room to collect the amulet.
16. Bitterwell - Talk to Geary and Kalka in Tyr. Reject all deliveries except those going to Niita, headmistress of the Elven Caravan. You'll need to carry about six items to her. As a reward, she will give you information that provides access to the isle near Bitter Well (Lake Isle.) Go there, but have a protection from fire and cure crit potion handy. Use the protection from fire, then follow the winding path til you get up to the north. You will set off 3 fire traps that will smoke you (pun fully intended ;p ) without the prot from fire. Exit to the north, use cure crit potion, prep up, and got to the Templar, Delsin. If you agree to do his little mission, the mines will be disabled in the future. (You don't actually have to do it.) Kill all the Draxans for about 45k total xp. Its probably best to try to take out Delsin quickly, with an area spell like wall of fire... he's mighty fond of casting dispel magic, which plays havok with ironskin and other preps.
By using the look icon on the Balaka tree near the southern entrance, and then taking wood, you can summon a string of shambling mounds to kill. Make sure you have free action on when you fight these guys, they can swallow you. (Yuck =X )
18. Elemental Boxing - Not a quest or anything, but something that we do that I think is fun as hell....Go to an open area with a friend, summon an elemental each, cast a mm on one to start a fight, and step back. Bet on who's elemental will win when they fight each other....Elementals can be prepped with iron skin, etc., but beware...if you lose control and it comes after you, it's hard to kill a fully prepped elemental....
19. Other Stuff Also try talking to, Parik the salt merchant, and Emil Nomel the Altaruk caravan master. Try playing around with the clockwork isle amulets, in conjunction with the statues in the tower on the first isle.... Try playing Elements and Influences with Zydeko in Altaruk... Try insulting Jogodin, the obnoxious armorer in Altaruk... Try talking with Cygnus, second in command of the pirates, during a raid on Altaruk... Try taking the glass orb from him to a painful isle in the silt sea...
