SSI Games

for the Commodore 64

The following SSI games were available for the Commodore 64 family of personal computers which included, besides the erstwhile C-64, the Commodore 128, 128D, and 64C.  Games marked with a * require joysticks.  All games require 64K RAM (naturally enough).

Unlike some other contemporary publishers, SSI produced no native Commodore 128 games and, as far as is known, no conversion plans ever existed.

On a personal note, it was on the Commodore 64 that I first experienced the Golden Age of SSI with Colonial Conquest, Cartels & Cutthroats, President Elect, and Rails West!.

Game categories are those listed at the time of release.  Some games changed categories frequently as SSI played with their classification system.  All release dates are taken from catalogs and are estimates.

(This game never, sadly, appeared in any regular catalog just one of the short supplements, so I am not sure how SSI classified it.  It was by the brilliant designer of Rails West! but the old "Educational Entertainment" label was long gone.  SSI may have considered it a wargame, but with its heavy emphases on economics and politics, strategy may be a more appropriate classification.)

Vaporware Games

"Afghanistan"

Untitled wargame of the Afghanistan civil war

Objective: Kursk

Reforger '88

War in Russia

Vital Statistics:

Active Support: 1983-1991

Last Catalog of Appearance: Summer 1993 Update lists 8 C-64 games.  The most expensive is Gettysburg: The Turning Point, still retailing for $29.95.  That catalog also has the interesting boo-boo of listing the C-64 version of Pool of Radiance as requiring 1MB!

First Game:

Computer Baseball

Last Game:

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (1991) (probably, but maybe Tony LaRussa's Ultimate Baseball which would present the irony of the first and last C-64 games being baseball games.)

Last Wargame:

Overrun (1989)

Last Non-TSR Fantasy Game:

Demon's Winter  (1988)
