The storm clouds over the Amiga HQ have gathered this week and the consequences of the various lightening strikes have left a trail of damage.
Some people earlier last week interpreted Amiga's announcement that they were going into a silence mode as a precaution against dangerous competitors. Amiga Flame has learned that serious security breaches had occurred leaving Amiga staff worried that competitors might use the leaked information to their advantage. However, it now seems that this silence mode has herald a period of sackings and even a resignation. Bill McEwen of Amiga was the first to be sacked on Tuesday, given 24 hours notice, and then ironically as storms do, the lightening struck twice, with the resignation of Amiga President, Jim Collas. There has been widespread shock and disbelief from within the Amiga Community, with many people asking questions as to why these events have come to pass and perhaps even more importantly how does this effect Amiga's plans. Amiga user, Claus Luethje said on hearing the announcement, “I'm not happy with what I learned about two top players at Amiga's leaving. I'm not sure what all this means”. Another user simply asked, “Why would he leave?” emphasizing the shock that this bombshell announcement has created within the Amiga Community. Bill Hoggett like many other Amiga owners felt that Jim Collas had been pushed out of his job, “JC was pushed, no matter what the official 'story' is. He wouldn't have put this much work into the Amiga future and then walked out just when it is about to release a product”. Amiga users felt compelled to pay tribute to the vision provided by former Amiga President, Jim Collas and to the work of Bill McEwen who had worked closely with Amiga developers. Andrew Korn said, “Bill, Jim, wherever you are - thanks for what you have done, and for what it's worth, my best wishes to you both”. There may never be an answer as to why these events have some to pass, but there are plenty of rumours to choose from. Many Amiga users suspect that Gateway 2000 pushed Collas into resigning, perhaps a victim of the internal politics that runs within Gateway 2000. The big question on everyone's mind is the consequences of what has been a negative week for the Amiga. Far from being in despair many Amiga owners are calling for calm. One unnamed Amiga user on Amiga's Bulletin Board pointed out that there is no need for alarm, “Take heart... I believe the Amiga Machine is already so far in motion that only a nuclear missile strike on San Jose would stop them now... the patents are filed... the Engineers (The real backbone of Amiga) have their vision... everything is already set in motion...”. Neil Bothwick sensibly suggested, “At the moment, nothing major has changed. Worry when they change direction, not when they change drivers”. Denis G La Bine of the Amiga Dealers Association has been in contact with Mr. VonHolle, another Vice-President of Amiga who was able to confirm that Amiga's game plan is still in place. Denis G La Bine told Amiga Flame, “We are still waiting for that word of "PRODUCTS NOW SHIPPING" to come down the pike. And after speaking with Mr. VonHolle today, I have all the confidence that day is nearer than ever, now with the present situation moving closer to a finished, effective, productive, and professionally equipped SHIP that will not only sail us to the next Ports, but most importantly is capable of weathering some very severe storms ahead”. Petro Tyschtschenko, Managing Director of Amiga International was called to meetings in America at the weekend, and so was unable to attend the Saku 99 show in Finland. However, after the meetings at the weekend he was able to speak to the audience via telephone and informed them that the plans remain the same with OS 3.5 coming out at the end of September and the Amiga NG is still on track. The new Amiga President, Tom Schmidt seems to be gaining confidence even though he has yet to make a statement, with one Amiga user stating, “I have faith that Tom Schmidt will be able to keep it going” and another said, “I'm sure Schmidt can do it”. The future does require clarity, but comments from Petro Petro Tyschtschenko, Denis G La Bine of the Amiga Dealers Association and comments on a CNET article from Brad Shaw of Gateway 2000 lead us to believe that the new Amiga President, Tom Schmidt formerly Vice-President & Chief Operating Officer of Amiga plans to continue with the plans already drawn up. However, for now the Amiga Community waits, hoping that the new Amiga President, Tom Schmidt will offer answers and reassurance.
