How do I earn a living?
- There are several ways to raise money in game; be on a
constant lookout for opportunities
- Working in the stables is
one way of obtaining cash, though you don't really earn
very much.
- Selling Spell Components to the Healer is another way.
- Fight and defeat goblins, brigands, and trolls in combat
and search their bodies for coins. You can also obtain
treasure from the ogre and the kobold although it will
take some effort to open their chests.
- Completing heroic quests such as rescuing the Baron's son
and finding the Healer's ring will also net you nice
monetary rewards.
A thief has other options as well. The Thieves' Guild is an ideal place
for fencing stolen goods for cash.
Where can I sleep at night?
Where can I practice my skills and spells?
- There are lots of places in the game to practice your fighting,
spellcasting and thieving skills. Keep a lookout for opportunity
but don't overdo things.
- You can practice fighting, parrying and dodging with the
Weapons Master in the Castle,
or monsters in the forest.
- A good way to build strength is to work daily in the
Castle Stables.
Magic can be practiced by casting spells at the monsters as well
as playing the Mage's Maze
with Erasmus in his house at Zauberberg.
This is the best way to practice the Fetch, Open & Trigger spells.
Cast Calm or Dazzle before entering into combat with monsters and
then nuke them with Flame Darts. If you are carrying a shield, drop
it before entering combat and you will be able to cast spells during
the fight.
- Climbing skills can be honed at the tree outside the
Healer's Hut, the
Castle or town wall at night,
Spirea Plants, or the Flying Falls. The
best climbing practice spot, however, is the Brigand Fortress Gate if
you can get past Toro the Minotaur.
- Practice throwing by playing Dag-Nab-It with the Chief Thief in the
Thieves' Guild. You can also throw daggers
or rocks at the Archery Range or the
various monsters you encounter.
Stealth can be used everywhere. Alternate between walking and
sneaking on your travels around Spielburg, and this help will build up
your Stealth. At higher, you will be able to avoid those nasty
monsters while sneaking.
Lock Picking is best done in the town at night. Don't try at one
door for a long time though. Also buy the profressional Acme Thieves'
toolkit from the guild as soon as you can
afford it.
Give me some tips on fighting the monsters.
- Read the game manuals on how to control your hero during combat
and section on the various monsters in Spielburg valley. Practice
frequently.
- Save your game often, and use multiple spots. When you encounter a
onster, save your game; since you won't be able to once you
enter combat.
- If you are wounded, drink a Healing Potion before entering combat.
- Low Stamina will affect your speed of attack as well as start
subtracting from your Health Points. Use a Vigor Potion before you
engage (or enrage) a foe.
- Carrying too much weight, or letting your character get tired,
will make fighting much harder. Don't carry anything more than you need.
- Remember that some monsters are too tough to fight until your skills
improve, so watch your Health Points and 'run away' whenever your
character is badly damaged. But be careful, there are some encounters
you can't run away from.
Strong fighter types should obtain the Chainmail armor from the
Dry Goods Store to boost your
defense in battle.
If you have magic, cast the Calm spell to avoid the tough encounters until
you have gained skill with the Dazzle, Flame Dart, and Zap spells.
Always have a Zap Spell on your weapon before entering combat. When
the monster is at a distance, alternately cast Dazzle and Flame Dart
spells to weaken it.
A Fighter with magic can use spells in combat if he drops his shield
before entering combat. Just remember to pick it up afterwards.
Another way to avoid monsters is to sneak through the forest. If you
are stealthy enough, you will avoid many encounters.
Throwing daggers (or rocks if you don't have daggers) from a distance
also weakens a monster. Just don't throw your last dagger unless you
have an alternate weapon!
- Be sure to search dead monsters for cash or other valuable bounty.
- Check out the
Monsters' guide for details on specific monsters.
Tell me something about the game plot and my mission.
- Everyone in quaint, alpine town of Spielburg seems to be
worried about the brigands, and they certainly are dangerous,
especially since the brigand leader took over! Ask everyone
you meet in the game about brigands, the brigand leader, and
the brigand warlock. There is a lot to be uncovered... But,
there is more going on here, and a deeper plot.
- The Baron Stefan von Spielburg is the ruler of Spielburg valley.
Long ago, he angered the Ogress Baba Yaga when he tried to force
her out of the valley. She cursed him that he would lose all that
he treasured most.
- Soon after, his little daughter Elsa was carried away by a large
winged creature that flew over the castle wall, grabbed her, and
flew off. No one ever saw her again. Yorick, the Baron's jester,
who was very devoted to Elsa, set out to rescue her and swore he
would not return until she was safe. No one ever saw him again
either. Although unrecognizable, both Elsa and Yorick are
somewhere in the valley.
- Then, some five years ago, the Baron's son, Barnard went out for
a morning ride one day and never came back. His horse returned
without him and had been raked by the claws of some large animal.
This too, was a part of Baba Yaga's curse. Although unrecognizable,
he too is somewhere in the valley.
- Now the Baron does not leave his castle or see any visitors.
Your mission is to break the curse, rescue the Baron's son and
daughter, rid the valley of Baba Yaga, and thus, become a true
hero. Think you can do it?
What can I do here?
- The Sheriff is a good person to ask about the local
situation. Ask about brigands, Otto, merchant, and
monsters. Also ask about heroes .
- Be sure to check out Otto's yo-yo action. Have you seen
him do the cat's cradle? How does he do that?
What can I do here?
- Ask the innkeeper Shameen about merchant, robbery,
wealth, and food .
- Sit down and order some food and beverage from Shema .
- The merchant Abdulla Doo comes in around suppertime. Ask
him about robbery, leader, minotaur, his name, and
Shapeir. He's down on his luck, so be
generous to him (give him money or rations or buy him a
meal), and he'll be a big help to you at the end of this
game.
- This is a good place to get a room for the night.
What can I do here?
What can I do here?
- Ask Zara about magic, the town, the valley, aura,
Erasmus, Erana, Baba Yaga, and the curse .
Ask her about spells, potions, Flame Dart, Fetch, Open,
and Initiation. Buy spells from her as soon as you can
afford them and then practice them.
- You can buy potions here, even though Zara charges more
for her 24-hour service. They are cheaper at the
Healer's.
What can I do here?
- Read the section in the Famous Adventurer's
Correspondence School Manual about the Adventurer's
Guild.
- Register at the desk (after all you are an adventurer by
profession) and read the log. Read the Quest Board.
- Look at the various heads mounted on the wall. You never
know when you might meet one alive.
- Ask the Guildmaster Wolfgang about the curse, Baron,
Barnard, Elsa, Yorick, Baba Yaga, the guild hall, the
various monsters on the wall, and about heroes .
What can I do here?
- You're kidding right? You BROKE in here and don't know
what to do?
- The Little old lady is definitely a sound sleeper.
- This is a good place to practice Thief skills, and make
some money. Save your game.
- Keep the cat happy. What do cats like? Petting, of
course.
- Search everywhere. Check out the furniture. What else do
you see?
- You'll find some loose change in the desk, the couch, and
the purse. The string of pearls from the knitting basket
and the candlesticks should also fetch a tidy sum.
- For grins, save your game and climb the stairs. Some
people like big pets.
What do I do here?
- Ask Hilde about Brigands and apples .
- Buy apples (50) when you need to fill someone's larder.
- This is another place to climb out of the town at night.
Practice your lock picking skills around
here at night. Just don't overdo it.
What do I do here?
- Look around when you come in, particularly behind the
counter.
- Ask the shopkeeper about equipment, armor, daggers, food,
and flasks. Buy what you need. Buy empty
flasks when you need to store liquids or powders and food
rations in case you get hungry later.
- Ask him about the book he's reading.
You can always use some spare daggers for
throwing.
A Fighter needs the best armor he can
afford once he is strong enough to handle it. (You
probably want to have a Strength of at least 60).
What can I steal here?
- If you are a Thief, this is the place to really practice
your skills. Save your game first, though.
- Listen and Look around. Take what you can get. Don't
neglect to search a bit.
- Now where would you hide a safe in this room? Look behind
the painting. But make sure you take the vase before you
try to get to the safe.
- You can get some silver from the desk and the safe, the
music box, the alabaster vase, and a gold candelabra!
- For giggles, save your game. Now restore to where you
first came in. Open the music box and see what happens.
Listen at the various doors and then check them out in
order of bottom to top. Just assume you are going to have
to restore the game frequently.
What do I do here?
- Read the notes on the doors.
At night, you can practice your thief
skills.
A beggar is asking me for money. What should I do?
- Have a heart, begging is his only source of income. Give
Sam the beggar some money. Who knows when and where he
may come in useful?
- Ask him about Brigands, begging, work, and night .
What else is there to do in the alley?
- Don't enter the alley at night, unless you are a Thief.
- Remember how to deal with kindred spirits. Consult the
Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School Manual.
- Make a thief sign to deal with your fellow thieves.
[VGA remake version] To make the thief
sign, click your lockpick on the thief.
- These guys have short memories; try not to run into them
unnecessarily.
What can I do here?
- Save your game. Explore the room. Somebody's using it as
a mailbox!
- Talk to the bartender. Ask him about drinks .
- Belly up to the bar and have a belt, but first notice the
condition of your fellow drinkers on the other stools.
Perhaps you should just say No.
Crusher's the one to talk to if you know
what to say. Consult the alley at night. Don't get
Crusher mad.
How do I get into the Thieves' Guild?
- Crusher can direct you to the Thieves Guild through the
tavern, but you must know the password.
- Slink & Sneak in the alley (at night) will give you
the password, if you identify yourself to them first.
What can I do here?
- Unless your character has Thieves' skills, don't go
there.
- Join the guild, fence the stolen goods, and buy what you
need.
- Play Dag-Nab-It along with the Chief Thief. Just remember, he will
cheat.
- Ask the Chief Thief about the guild, home, and daggers.
What can I do here?
- Bruno is not exactly the most honest person you meet in
this game, so be careful with what he tells you. Still,
he does know how to get into Baba Yaga's hut .
- Don't get Bruno mad - he fights dirty.
Do what a Thief is supposed to do when he
meets another Thief. Remember your Correspondence School
Manual's advice about this.
How do I get into town at night?
- Climb the wall, of course!
- There is no other way.
What can I do here?
- The road is blocked by recent snow slides. You won't be
able to go anywhere.
- Walk along the road several times to find a fox.
- Be kind to animals.
What do I do with the fox?
- Show some kindness, free the fox.
What can I do here?
- This is a good place to practice dagger throwing if you
have some skill.
- You can spy on some bad dudes here. After the Baronet is
freed, see their note left in the tavern. They meet here
at noon.
- Don't be too quick to exit from your spy hole. Remember
the password.
Get the key from one who stays behind. But
don't rush it, you don't want to run into Bruno.
What can I do here?
- You can't do much in the cemetery during daytime.
- At night, be sure to rub the Undead Unguent on yourself
before entering the cemetery, or you find yourself
getting killed. The Unguent will only work once and for a
limited amount of time. So work fast. Also, don't fall in
any open graves.
- Get the mandrake root (on the centermost grave) when you
life depends on it, and get out of here. Be sure to pick
it around midnight or it will vanish (though it regrows
after three days).
- Get out of the graveyard the way you came in, or climb
into town.
What can I do here?
- The Healer is your friend. She will buy spell components
from you, help you make the dispel potion, sell you
healing, vigor, and magic potions, and the Undead
Unguent.
- Ask Amelia Appleberry about potions, spell components and
her lost ring.
- Sell magic mushrooms, flowers from
Erana's Peace, troll beards, and cheetaur claws to
her.
- Give the following components to the Healer for making
the dispel potion: a magic acorn,
flowers from Erana's Peace, green fur, flying
water, and fairy dust.
- If you find her lost ring, she will give you a special
reward.
Where is the Healer's ring?
- See the Healer's pet Pterosaur? Ask her about it.
- The Healer's Ring is in the nest in front of her hut.
How can I get the ring?
If you're good at throwing, throw rocks at
the nest until it falls out of the tree.
You can also use your climbing skills to get
to the nest.
Cast a Fetch spell to get the nest.
- Take the ring to the healer and you'll get a special
surprise!
How do I get into the castle?
- To get into the castle ground, tell the gatekeeper to
open the gate.
- At night, just climb the wall.
- Karl the gatekeeper knows many useful things. You can ask
him about almost anything. Ask him about the valley,
castle, the Baron, the Baron's son and daughter, Yorick,
curse, Baba Yaga, hut, stable, graveyard, brigands,
reward, and about heroes.
Who is the baron?
- Baron Stefan von Spielburg is Lord of Spielburg Valley.
He angered Baba Yaga when he ordered her to leave
Spielburg. She cursed him and he soon lost his daughter,
then his son. Now the Baron will not leave his castle or
see any visitors. If you rescue his son, you will be
permitted to see him.
What happened to the Baron's son?
- Five years ago the Baronet went out for a morning ride.
His horse returned without him and had been raked by the
claws of some large animal. This too, was part of Baba
Yaga's curse. Although unrecognizable, he is somewhere in
the valley. If you are serious about becoming a Hero,
find the Baronet Barnard von Spielburg (there is also a
hefty reward offered for his safe return).
What happened to the Baron's daughter?
- Baba Yaga put an enchantment on the Baron's daughter. To
break the spell, talk to the Dryad. When Elsa was a
little girl, a large winged creature flew over the castle
wall, grabbed her, and flew off. No one ever saw her
again. Although unrecognizable, she is somewhere in the
valley. If you are serious about becoming a Hero, find
Elsa von Spielburg (there is also a hefty reward offered
for her safe return).
What became of Yorick, the Baron's Jester?
- Yorick was devoted to the Baron's daughter. After Elsa
was kidnapped, he set out to rescue her and swore he
would not return until she was safe. No one ever saw him
again. Although unrecognizable, he is somewhere in the
valley.
What can I do here?
- Ask the Weapon Master about his name, the baron, and the
brigands. He can be usually found around
mid-morning.
Ask the Weapon Master about practice and
then work out with him daily. This is a good way to
improve your fighting skills and build your strength.
- When your fighting skills are high enough, you should be
able to beat him. Just be aggressive and thrust often so
as not to give him an opening. Also make sure you're not
overburdened with lot of inventory or you'll get tired
very soon.
What can I do here?
- The guard is just surly, so you can do nothing useful
here.
What can I do here?
- The work here won't make you rich, but it does help build
your body and gives you a safe place to sleep. You can
build some muscles with that rake.
- No you can't ride the horse!
How do I get in to see the Baron?
- You must first rescue the Baronet before you are granted
an audience with the baron.
- Ask the guards about the castle, the baron, his son and
daughter.
What can I do here?
- You won't be able to see the Baron unless you find out
what happened to his son and rescue him.
- Fine food, a nice bed, and money - thank you very much.
- Ask Baron Stefan von Spielburg about the Baroness, his
daughter, Baba Yaga, the curse and the prophecy .
What can I do here?
- Ask the centaur about his name, Hilde, the baron,
brigands, and the brigand leader.
How do I locate the Dryad?
- Follow the White Stag (southwest of the town) until he
leads you to the Dryad, Keeper of the Woods.
- For giggles, save your game and try throwing daggers or
casting Flame Dart spells at the Stag when you first see
him. Now go visit the Dryad.
What can I do here?
- The stag is the Dryad's pet and will lead you to her.
Follow what she says and you'll score some puzzle points.
- If you get her the Spirea seed,
the Dryad will tell you the ingredients for making a
dispel potion and give you a magic acorn.
- For giggles, save your game and try throwing daggers or
casting Flame Dart spells at the Stag when you first see
him. Now go visit the Dryad.
- Also in the category of How-Not-To-Win is to hack and
slash the flowers to get the seed. Then see what the
Dryad does to you.
How can I get
a dispel potion made?
- Bring the ingredients to the Healer and she will make it
for you.
- You'll need the following ingredients
What good is the dispel potion?
- Use the dispel potion for breaking enchantments.
What can I do here?
- Pick some mushrooms during the daytime for the Healer.
- For some wild hallucinations, try eating a mushroom. Be
sure to save your game first.
- At night, obey the Fairies. Don't step into the Fairy
Ring or you'll be sorry (unless you save your game first
- it is rather amusing).
- Make sure you have an empty flask when you ask the
Fairies for what you need.
- Dance for the fairies when you encounter them at night,
then ask for and get the fairy dust. Use an empty flask
to store the dust. Give the dust to the Healer - you need
it for the dispel potion.
- For giggles, try having a character with low agility
dance. He's not exactly Fred Astaire.
What can I do here?
- Talk to the Meeps.
- Ask the green-furred boss meep about meeps, fur, and
green fur. You need some green fur for the
dispel potion.
Ask about magic, spell, and scroll. Get the Detect Magic
spell.
What can I do here?
- This is a good place to fight lots of goblins and build
up skills and cash.
The goblins are easy to defeat - go ahead
and fight them to build up your Strength and Weapon Use
skills before taking on something really scary. Don't
forget to search your opponents' after you kill them.
You can cast spells at them, but may not be able to
handle too many of them at once. Dazzle and Flame Darts
are your best bets during close encounters.
A thief can throw daggers or rocks before
entering into combat. He too may not be able to handle a
larger number of them together.
- You don't need to enter the goblins' den. The entrance is
too small for you.
How do I get in to see Baba Yaga?
- You don't really want to see Baba Yaga unless you have al
least 100 silvers and it is around midday.
- To get through the gate, make a deal with the skull.
- Ask about the rhyme before the skull opens the gate. If
you didn't succeed, leave and try again later.
- Type the rhyme. This is magic, so get the words exactly
right.
What deal should I make with Bonehead (skull)?
Ok, I give up! What is the rhyme?
- You can ask Bonehead or Bruno about the rhyme.
- It's "Hut of brown, now sit down".
Baba Yaga keeps turning me into a Frog!
- Wise up! Answer YES to all her questions, and get her the
Mandrake Root. Be sure to
deliver it before dawn.
- You can't do much against Baba Yaga until you stop the
Brigands.
- During the endgame: Take some time to reflect upon the
matter. You really need to make Baba Yaga croak.
How do I obtain the Mandrake Root?
- The root grows in the graveyard
next to the town.
- Buy the Unguent from the Healer's to protect you from
things that lurk in a graveyard at night.
- Don't drink that thing! You're supposed to rub it all
over you.
- Pull out the mandrake root at exactly midnight. If you
try to pick it at the wrong time, it will vanish and
regrow after 3 days.
How do I get the seed?
- You can get the seed in one of three ways: by using your
climbing, throwing, or spell casting skills. Therefore,
you need to increase your skill level in one of these
areas by practicing them often.
Cast Fetch or Open spells to get the seed.
Climb and then catch the seed.
Get rocks and throw them until you knocks
the seed down.
What can I do here?
- This is a safe place to spend the night. Sleeping here
will restore your health, stamina, and magic points.
- Eat some fruit from the tree to appease your hunger.
- Pick some flowers for the Healer.
You can even get a spell here.
How do I get the Calm spell?
- Read the runes on the stone in the Magic
Meadow and cast the Open spell.
How do I get past the Ogre?
- That Ogre is tough... and BIGGGGG! You MUST get past the
ogre to enter the cave!
You need to build up your Strength,
Agility, and Weapons Use skills before attempting to take
him on. Try fighting some wimpier monsters, then come
back later.
Cast the Calm spell and run into the cave. Or weaken him
with Flame Darts before fighting him.
Throw daggers at him until he is weak, then
fight him.
- Once you have defeated the ogre, search his body. He has
a typical Ogre's treasure chest. Force the chest to find
a treasure.
What can I do with the bear?
- What does a hungry bear want? Feed the bear some rations
or use the Calm spell.
- Why doesn't the bear move? The chain around his hind leg
is enchanted. You will have to break the enchantment by
finding the magic key.
- For an in-joke, talk to the bear. Now, try it again.
What should I do inside the Kobold cave?
- 'Look' at the Kobold. He has a key hanging around his
neck that you need.
Fight and defeat the Kobold. Keep moving
to avoid the Lightning Balls he throws at you. He will teleport often,
just keep going after him. After he dissolves into a sticky pool, simply pick up the key.
Cast Detect Magic & Fetch spells to get the key.
Careful! If you disturb him, you're in trouble! To fight
the Kobold:
- Don't let the Kobold cast a Reversal spell. If
you let him, he can defend himself against
anything you throw. All your magical attacks will
come back to you.
- Alternate casting the Dazzle and Flame Dart
spells until he keels over.
- If he is successful in casting a spell, or you
run out of mana points, finish him off with your
dagger (It's a good idea to cast the Zap spell on
it beforehand) or run away and live to try
another day!
Sneak over and get the key from around the
Kobold's neck. Defeat him by throwing daggers at him and
dodging his spells.
- The magic key will unlock the chain on the bear's leg.
- There's a hidden treasure
chest here also.
- You don't need the toadstools; let them be.
How do I get the
Kobold's treasure?
Search the cave and find the Kobold's
chest. Break the chest open, but you character is in for
a very nasty surprise! Drink a Healing Potion first.
Cast Detect Magic to find the chest and then Open or
Trigger spell on it (Stand back when casting the spell).
Search the cave and find the Kobold's chest.
Try to pick the lock, but your character had better be
good at it! It might've been easier had you known how to
disarm traps.
What can I do here?
- If you are not multilingual, the first signs say
"Welcome to Magic Mountain".
- Just avoid the signs and walk up the path.
How do I get past the Gargoyle?
- The questions CAN be tough! Here it is a matter of using
your SAVE and RESTORE options. Each time the gargoyle
asks a question that you KNOW the answer to - SAVE your
game before answering. If you get zapped back down to the
bottom of the mountain, simply RESTORE.
- He also has one trick question. When he asks for the
secret password to the Thieves
Guild, don't give him the right answer - he doesn't
want any thieves in there.
- You only have to answer three questions correctly.
- Figure out what is the name of this game (Hero).
- Did you guess that Erasmus' favorite color was purple (or
pink depending upon your perception) and therefore so is
yours?
- If he asks you "What is the meaning of life?"
dig out your copy of The Hitchhikers Guide or multiply 7
times 6.
- If he asks you for the mean airspeed of an unladen
swallow, ask him whether it is an African or a European
swallow.
- If asked your name, you MUST type in your name EXACTLY
the same as you originally gave it when you named your
character.
- Learn about the Baron in the Adventurer's
Guild Hall (Stefan).
- Know whose house this is by asking Zara in the Magic Shop about the valley. You
can also ask her about the aura around the town
(Erasmus).
What can I do here?
- All you really need to do here is to climb up the stairs
to the tower.
- On the other hand, how many in-jokes can you spot in this
room? There are references and direct rip-offs from
King's Quest IV, Leisure Suit Larry II, Police Quest II,
Colonel's Bequest, and Conquests of Camelot from Sierra
On-Line.
What can I do with the Wizard?
- Erasmus is a powerful wizard who knows a lot about magic.
He will help you in this and later games. Fenrus is
Erasmus' intelligent, and sarcastic familiar.
- Ask your questions quickly or you'll have to listen to
Erasmus' really terrible jokes (don't guess too many of
them). He can give useful information about Erana, the
protection spell around town, Baba Yaga, curses,
countercurses, and magic mirrors .
- If you have a strong stomach for bad humor, ask about
necromancers.
Play the Mage's Maze and
win the Dazzle spell from Erasmus. Don't worry if it
takes you a few tries - it's good practice.
How do I play the
Mage's Maze?
- Read about the mage's maze in your game manuals.
- Buy a Magic Potion at the Healer's House and use it during the
game when you run low on Mana points. You can do by clicking on the
potion bottle in the VGA version or by typing
drink magic potion in the EGA version.
- The higher your skill level with a spell, the longer is duration
you get to cast the spell for. This helps for Fetch and Open
spells as it gives you more time to target them. Trigger is
instantaneous though.
- Study the map first, and plan your strategy.
- Your creature is extremely perverse, so use the Flame
Dart spell to lure it in the direction you want it to go. To
dismiss a Flame Dart, press ESCAPE key.
- Blocking the wizard's character (by pulling a ladder or
bridge from under it, blocking it's way, or eating it up)
often buys you time.
- Large size eats medium, and medium eats small. If Erasmus'
creature is nearby, sometimes it makes sense to change
your creatures size so as to eat it.
- The creature must be small-sized to pass through the tunnels and
medium-sized to descend ladders. You can trigger to other
sizes to prevent from doing so also.
- You can fetch ladders or bridges completely off the maze and
store them by the menu bar for later use. Note that Erasmus
can fetch them back into the board though.
- Even if you win the Maze, you can play it over and over again
for a great way to improve you magic and spell skills.
- If you think winning this one is hard, wait till you get
to the Advanced Mage's Maze in a later game!
What can I do with the
Frost Giant?
- Ask the frost giant about name, Jotunhiem, bargain, and
gem.
- Bargain with Brauggi. Fill has hands with fruit (it takes
50 apples to satisfy him, get the apples from Hilde's stand in the town) and
he'll give you a glowing gem.
What can I do here?
- 'Look' at the Falls. There is a hint hidden in the
message about something you will eventually need.
- The Hermit lives next to the waterfall.
If you have throwing skills, you can
gather some rocks near the waterfall and throw them at
the door until the Hermit opens up.
If you have climbing skills, just climb up
to his door.
If you have magic skills, cast the Detect Magic spell.
- Be sure to knock at the door and then get out of the way.
- To get Flying Water from this location, you need an empty
flask. Drink a Potion or buy a flask from the Dry Goods Store.
What can I do here?
- Ask 'Enry the Hermit about the falls, brigands, Warlock,
Erasmus, mirror and hermit.
He'll be highly happy if you ask him about his entire
family.
- This is a safe place to spend the night if you like to
play cribbage.
Ask him about magic, spells, Reflect spell, Trigger spell
and scrolls. Be sure to get what he's willing to give.
- For giggles, save your game and try harming the Hermit by
fighting or throwing spells or taking things. He's not as
defenseless as he looks.
What can I see here?
- Isn't this a pretty picture? Come back to the lake again
for something completely different.
What can I do here?
- Don't get too close to the Antwerp and you'll be safe.
You don't need to bother with it. (But fighting the
Antwerp can be amusing as long as you save the game
first.)
- There's a hidden passage
to the Brigand Fortress from here.
Where is the
secret passage to the Brigand's Fortress?
- If you have rescued the Baronet and received your reward
you will find a note on the floor under a bar stool in
the Tavern in the morning. It will tell you of a secret
meeting near the old target outside of town.
- Spy on Brutus and Bruno at high noon. Get the key from
Brutus.
- The entrance to the lair is near the Bouncer (the
Antwerp).
- Search the rocks on the west for the keyhole.
Use the key you got from Brutus.
- [Magic User] Cast an Open spell.
Pick the lock.
- Push open the rock (takes some strength) and type the
password you learned by spying (Hiden Goseke).
- If you say the secret password before entering the cave,
Fred the Troll won't harass you (unless you are foolish
enough to go through the passage leading to the den).
What can I do here?
- Did you remember to use the password before entering?
- If you say the secret password before entering the cave,
Fred won't harass you (unless you are foolish enough to
go through the passage leading to the den).
- If not, he is one tough character and you can't run away
from this encounter.
- Your exit is to the southeast.
What can I do here?
- This was not the way to go. Fred and his friends will be
happy to battle with you now that you found him. If by
the slight chance you actually defeat the Troll, you
could search the pile of junk on the floor (assuming you
have a strong stomach).
- You are either very lucky or better than the designers if
you can win this battle.
How do I get past these brigands?
- This place is a good one to avoid. Use the Secret Passage
instead.
- If you want to be truly macho, a really tough Fighter can
run to the barricade, climb it, fight the Brigands, and
survive. But there is someone waiting for you in the next
room.
How do I get past the Minotaur and the gate?
A Fighter should take a subtle approach.
Fight the Minotaur, then search his body. It is advised
that you take a Healing Potion after the battle, assuming
you win. Ring the bell? Isn't that a little alarming? A
Fighter should next force the gate.
Cast Calm spell and then cast Open on the gate. Now, open
and stroll through the gate.
Sneak behind the Minotaur's back to behind
the rock on the east cliff wall. Then climb over the
fence when the Minotaur is looking the other way.
How do I navigate this room?
- This room was designed by the Brigand Warlock. Watch out
for his sense of humor and save your game.
- Go around the west barricade, the east cabinet will trigger
the jack-in-the-box. However, if you examine the east cabinet
first, you'll be ok.
- Then go across the east bridge.
If you accidently disturb the archers, you can always dazzle
them. But you'll have to move fast and re-cast as necessary.
- Go over to the gap between the barrels and sacks, then
type 'Step over the rope'.
- For giggles, restore the game and do everything wrong.
How do I get through this one?
- You can figure out this room yourself if you think like a
swashbuckler.
- Block the doors and avoid the Brigands. Shut the door,
move the chair, push the candelabra, climb the table,
open the door. Now all you figure out is the timing.
- As you enter the cafeteria, shut and block the door. Go
over to the door on the eastern wall and move the chair
to block the wall. Walk to the right side of the
candelabra and wait until the brigand guards enter from
the west and approach you around the back of the table.
Push the candelabra, then quickly move in front of the
table. Wait until the lead brigand comes around to the
front corner of the table. Then climb the table and swing
from the chandelier, closing the west wall door in time,
and trapping the brigand guards. Finally, open the door
to your north.
How do I stop the Warlock and get past this room?
- Who is this guy, anyway? If you haven't figured it out,
you are in real trouble.
- Ask him about who you know the Brigand Leader is, or ask
him about his true name.
- Drink a Healing Potion if you are badly wounded, and
explore this room. It's a load of laughs, but the joke's
on you.
- If you get in the habit of falling, maybe you'd better
'stop'.
- Follow the following route (refer to guide map):
Go in Door 1 which takes you out Door 2. (Or fall over
the edge and type 'stop'.) Go through Door 3 which takes
you to 4. Type 'Pull rope'. Go back through 4 and then go
in Door 5. This takes you to Door 6. Step out in front of
Door 7. Type 'Open door', and step back into Doorway 6.
After the door falls, step back out. Type 'Open door' and
walk out of this room.

What do I do with the Brigand Leader?
- Use the Dispel Potion.
- Don't waste time. 'Look at desk'. Get the important
object off the desk. Also get the healing potions if you
need them.
- Exit quickly through the passage behind the treasure
chest on the east wall.
- Now who are you going to call on? After all, she
definitely deserves it.
How do I rescue the Baron's son?
- The Kobold wizard turned the Baronet into a bear and
keeps him chained up in his cave! To lift the
enchantment, go to the Kobold's
cave. To get in his cave you must defeat the Ogre.
Once you get in his cave and defeat him, get the Kobold's
key and unlock the chain around the Baronet's leg.
Where is the Baron's daughter?
What happened to Yorick?
- You'll find Yorick's skull buried outside Elsinor.
Oops... wrong story!
- Yorick is now the Brigand
Warlock.
How can I defeat Baba Yaga?
- Get the Magic Mirror from the Brigand Leader's room.
Then, go to Baba Yaga's Hut
and use the mirror on her. When she casts a spell at you,
her spell will reflect back at her and turn her into a
frog!
