Where can I find the Whirlwind spell that is mentioned in the manual?
- Whirlwind is NOT available anywhere in Mordavia.
- You will be able to get it in Quest for Glory 5: Dragon Fire.
- It is rumored that the Faerie Queen will sometimes use Whirlwind
against the Hero.
My Flaming sword does not burst into flames in combat! I'm pretty sure that I have
earned the Flame Sword ability as a paladin.
- If you're playing the floppy version of the game, the art didn't make it into
it, and you're sword won't flame visually.
- This was fixed in the CD version of the game.
- Also, remember you need to have a paladin's sword before you can make it flame.
- You will eventually get Piotyr's sword from Dmitri.
At the slimy, slippery path near the beginning of the game, I
get a lock up or crash (Error 47: Not an object: $0 Script 64997/$146)
when I try to slide down.
- In the QFG4 control panel, turn DETAIL
all the way down and SPEED all the way up.
- If that doesn't help, walk the hero in
small increments until the computer takes over and slides the hero
down to the bottom of the path. Once you're at the bottom, you're OK.
- The error only happens if your hero is trying to get past the tree at
the top of the screen.
Alternatively,
you can use your Trigger spell on the Squid rock and then walk down.
What is the combination to the safe in the Thieves' Guild?
- This has been probably the most frustrating puzzle in the entire series.
- The answer is in plain sight - the combination is "FILCH", the safe manufacturer's name.
- How do you dial this combination?
- Make sure you have a knob first. Search the farthest grate.
- Only certain letters appear on the dial of the safe, like this
| B | D | F | H | J | L
- The lines represent the missing letters!
- Click on F, then the dash between H & J (I), then L, and so on.
What's up with the hawk in the forest?
- The hunting hawk that flies around in the forest is not following you.
- You cannot interact with it. It's just a graphic effect.
- If you are feeling particularly sadistic, you can throw things or
cast spells at it.
Where can I find the answers to the Leshy's riddles?
- Riddle #1: "Guess my name". Read about Leshy's name in the books in the
Adventurer's Guild.
- Riddle #2: "Bush in trouble". Get the bonsai bush from goo, and plant it
in Erana's garden.
- Riddle #3: "Who lives in the lake?". Go to the lake and talk to the Rusalka.
- Riddle #4: "Who hides her hut behind sticks?" Say "magic phrase" or Trigger
bush to Baba's place, then talk to the skull.
- Riddle #5: "Name of killer bush". Learn about Elderberry Pie from Baba Yaga.
Riddle #6: "What
do the faeries seek?" Talk to the faeries about Erana's staff.
Where is Baba Yaga's hut?
- She has her hut hidden by the Hangman's tree in the lower southeast corner of the woods.
- Use the LOOK cursor as you explore the
the southeastern edges of the forest and you should catch glimpses of the
chicken-legged hut.
- Magic bushes block the way to her hut, and you will need to get past them.
You need the
magic phrase to make them disappear; the Leshy or the gypsies can help you with this.
Simply
use an appropriate spell to trigger the bushes' disappearance.
You can go over the
bushes with your skills.
Is there any way to both get the Hide spell and help the jester get his humor back?
Which one should I choose when I return to Baba Yaga's in exchange for pie?
- Doesn't matter. You can choose either one on your first visit after making the pie.
- You can then go back and visit her again safely, as long as you bring along some food.
- Keep in mind that Baba's definition of "food" differs substantially from what
you and I call food.
- She will accept such gruesome delights as garlic, goo, bones, or bonemeal.
- In return, you can get something from her.
How can I help the Rusalka?
- Besides befriending her, only a paladin can truly help the Rusalka and deliver her
from her current plight.
- Talk to the gypsies first - they will be able to point you in the right direction.
- For more explicit details, check the Hints section.
Help! I am getting crashes when trying to fight the Chernovy
wizards in the swamp (Error 52: A script is being disposed and there is a cloned
object that is still using a class in it). That is, HOW DO I GET AROUND THE
DREADED ERROR 52?
[Solutions compiled by Chip Larouche from the Anthology README and other sources]
- Basically, this error is caused by your system running to fast for the game.
QFG4 was written before today's faster computers existed. It was programmed on slower
systems. There are areas in the game that have timers in the programming and require
scripts to be played out at certain speeds. These areas of the game have trouble on
fast systems and generate this error 52.
- Most of these solutions involve various ways of slowing down your computer temporarily,
playing through the swamp sequence, and restoring your settings back to normal.
- Solution #1 (DOS version): No Audio. Exit the game. From the Quest for
Glory 4 directory on your hard drive, run INSTALL and choose IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER
for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH. Save these choices, restart the game, and restore a
game before the swamp. From the swamp, go left three screens, then down two screens.
Kill the monsters, get the ritual and get out as fast as you can. If this doesn't
work, restore a game saved earlier and try again.
- Solution #2 (DOS version): Use Windows versionIf it still doesn't work, delete the MS-DOS version, install the Windows version,
and play the game in Windows. Be aware that if you want to play the Windows version,
you'll have the start the game over from the beginning, since the saved games are not
compatible between DOS and Windows. Error 52 can also occur in the Windows versions,
but there have been reports that one work around is to get to the edge of the swamp,
save game, then start as many other programs as your computer can handle. This can often
slow down your computer enough to get you by.
- Solution #3: Use MO'SLO: A
shareware program called Mo'slo can be used to slow down your machine temporarily.
Copy Mo'slo onto the root directory of your C: drive. Then, Shutdown the Computer and
Restart it in MS-DOS Mode. Type in CD\ and press
ENTER. Then type MOSLO /30
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM and press ENTER. Change to
the game directory (for example, you may need to type CD C:\SIERRA\QG4CD
and hit ENTER). Then type QG4CD
and press ENTER to start the game.
- If you have the Windows version of the game installed, you can try to use Mo'slo
from a DOS prompt within Windows. Please note, however, that on some systems you may not
be able to use Mo'slo this way. Copy Mo'slo onto the root directory of your C: drive.
Click on Start, then go to Programs, and then click on MS-DOS Prompt. Type in
CD\" and press ENTER. Then type
MOSLO /30 C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM and press
ENTER. Now, minimize the DOS Window (do not close it) and
start the game as you normally would.
- >Solution #4 (Windows version): Use TURBO.
For the Windows Version being played on WIN95, you can use a utility called TURBO,
available from www.shareware.com
amongst other places on the web. Try setting the of normal to about 70%. If error 52
happens again, lower it to 50%.
- If you are still having the same problem with the game, it may be that your saved game
has become corrupt or it may be that you saved at a point too close to where the error
occurs. If this is the case, you will need to restore the game from a previous save.
- For those of you who have the latest QFG Collection, there are some saved games on the
CD. Depending on whether you are playing the DOS or Windows version of the game, the saved
game files can be found here: DOS D:\SAVES\QG4DOSCD\2 Windows D:\SAVES\QG4WINCD\2\
(This assumes "D" is your CD-ROM drive letter. If this is not the case, please substitute
the appropriate CD-ROM drive letter.)
- Solution #5: Disable L2 Cache. Here's another method,
but it requires you to tamper with your computer's basic setup. Go into a computer's
CMOS settings and temporarily disable its L2 Cache. WARNING: DON'T TRY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE
VERY COMFORTABLE WITH DOING THIS. AND YOU HAVE THE COMPUTER SYSTEM MANUAL IN HAND.
YOU CAN MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER PERMANENTLY IF YOU DON'T DO IT EXACTLY RIGHT!
- Solution #6: Find a slower computer. If all of this
fails, about your only choice is to find a slower computer (maybe a friend has a 486-66mhz
he'd let you borrow). Or, Ask someone on the FACS
message board to use THEIR slow computer to get you past this part of the game.
Many kind folks on this board would be willing to help. What YOU have to do is bring your
character to the edge of the swamp BEFORE the problem happens. If you're playing the
DOS version of the game, from the Quest for Glory 4 directory on your hard drive, run INSTALL
and choose IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH. Save these choices,
restart the game, and restore a game before the swamp and save your game in a NEW
directory. Email that saved game AND the other file (glorysg.cat) that is in that
NEW directory and tell the person who has volunteered to help you whether you are playing
in DOS or Windows (error 52 occurs less frequently in Windows, but the saved games CANNOT be
used from the DOS version).
- If you're sending the DOS version of the game, make sure the volunteer knows to
configure his/her system to IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH.
- It's also helpful if you tell your "volunteer" what type of character you are so he/she
knows how to fight. Also be PATIENT, the volunteer might have a "life of their own" so don't expect
your Friday night email to be answered the next morning. It might take a few days!
- The volunteer will then enter the swamp, fight the two Chernovies, get the ritual,
and get back to the edge of the swamp and save the game. Then he/she will email the
two files back to you. Put these in the SAME NEW DIRECTORY you had the original two files.
Fire up the game and point it back to this new directory. Continue the game as usual.
If you're playing DOS, you MIGHT be able to go back and change your settings BACK to the
original ones you had to improve sound and music, but I can't guarantee that!
Tell me about the Dark One Rituals and where I can find them.
I'm having difficulty spelling 'AVOOZL' at the squid stone to get
the Breath Ritual. What do I do?
- Your goal is to spell 'AVOOZL', the name of the Dark One.
- However, sometimes when you click upon a letter, the pointer doesn't
end up on the same letter. In that case, click on the letter again.
- The double Os may cause some problem - simply click the letter O three times.
- This sequence of letter clicks usually works: AVVOOOZZLL
At the final battle, after having defeated Ad Avis, I am unable to retrieve my staff.
What should I do?
- This is a known bug.
- After destroying Ad Avis, if you change the cursor to anything (LOOK, WALK,
DO etc.), you will not be able to cast Summon Staff ever again to complete the
game. You will keep getting the "You are too busy" message.
- To work around, you must RESTORE prior to destroying Ad Avis, then kill him
as usual (Summon Staff, Tell Joke, Cast Force Bolt), and then do the following
WITHOUT changing the cursor:
- Cast Force Bolt again in the distance.
- Cast Summon Staff. Your cursor will change to the Staff.
- Click the Staff on the Crystal.
Can I become a paladin in this game?
- Nope. There is no one living in Mordavia who can proclaim you a paladin.
