The final episode of the Quest for Glory saga, Dragon Fire takes place in Silmaria, on the island kingdom of Marete. In Shadows of Darkness, you managed to defeat the vampire Ad Avis and banished the Dark One forever from Mordavia. But the victory was bitter - the Dark Master Katrina was destroyed trying to save you, and even the Archmage Erana, while her soul was freed from the clutches of darkness, could not be brought back to life. As things settled down in Mordavia, you were summoned by the wizard Erasmus to Silmaria.
Once a glorious and peaceful fortress on the island paradise of Marete, the city of Silmaria and its inhabitants are in serious trouble. The Ruler has been assassinated by the deadly poison of an unknown assailant. The fishing villages have been invaded, and the fortress walls of the city are besieged with Mercenary Soldiers from Hesparia. The sea folk who once were peaceful have declared open warfare against sea travel. Even the countryside has become overrun with deadly monsters. A centuries-old prophecy of doom foretells of this, and more. If a hero does not step forth soon, a primordial Dragon will rise from the center of the island, and all will be destroyed by its flames.
You have been summoned to Silmaria by your Archmage mentor and friend, Erasmus. You must enter the Rites of Rulership, and prove your worthiness to become King. You must stop the assassin before all your friends are murdered, and you, too, die from his poisonous blade. You must prevent the Dragon from rising from the fire, or destroy it by whatever means you can. You may win a kingdom's throne, pursue a fair woman's heart, or you can die with all friends who depend upon you. Only the greatest Hero in the world can accomplish this. That's why YOU were summoned.
Together with four other competitors, you will face the challenges of the seven Rites - Freedom, Conquest, Valor, Destiny, Courage, Peace, and Justice. Around all of you, a deadly web of deceit and murder tightens. It will take all your wit and skills to survive. Who is behind the series of assassinations? Who is trying to make the dark Prophecy come true? Who can you trust and who is playing their own power game in their Quest For Glory? You will need to know these answers, if you are to survive Dragon Fire.
This fifth and final chapter will be the epitome of adventure, excitement and challenge in your Hero's career. It will take all of your wit and mastery of skills to face the challenge of Silmaria, overcome daunting obstacles and win the laurel crown of rulership. Along the way, you'll meet a lot of your old friends and foes from past games, make new friends, and help others with your heroic deeds. You'll even have an opportunity for amusing flirtations, and a chance at wooing the woman of your dreams. Even a Hero's gotta have a life sometime!
Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire was recently released in December 1998 under the Sierra FX label by the newly christened Yosemite Entertainment, a division of Sierra Online's parent company, Cendant Software. Developed primarily due to fan demand after Sierra had decided to cancel the series following lackluster sales of QFG4, this last episode took nearly 3 years in development, and was a mega-project involving a huge team of talented designers, programmers, artists, musicians, voice actors, QA technicians and more. Lori Cole, along with Terry Robinson were the official designers on this game, while Corey Cole was back as a programmer on this team.
While continuing an awesome storyline, multi-dimensional characters, wickedly funny humor, challenging puzzles, and a well-balanced RPG system in the grand tradition of the past games, Dragon Fire features such firsts as beautifully rendered 3D scrolling panoramas, in-situ combat, and even a cooperative multiplayer option. The replayablity aspect is also much more enhanced, owing to many side-quests and lots of player choices in controlling the story line of the game. For more informatiom, check the Technical Details page.
Although a sneak-peek demo of the game was first made available in 1997, the Dragon Fire
team is planning to release a new playable demo early this year. And if you enjoyed the superb
music of the game, by emmy-winning composer Chance Thomas, you can order the
Dragon Fire Soundtrack CD from the QFG5 website.
Currently, a patch is in the works that will fix some critical bugs in the game and enable
multiplayer support. There has also been some talk of an expansion pack to the game, but it is
merely speculation at this point.
