Introduction

Perhaps the most anticipated 2D fighting game since SFIII, SNK vs. Capcom will unite fans who have been divided between the two most successful fighting game producers. With features and fighters from either side of the rift, SNKvsC should have something for everybody.

SNK and Capcom

Just in case you aren't a fight fan, SNK and Capcom are two very successful companies who have been making fighting games for years. Capcom's main library includes the Street Fighter, Marvel and Darkstalkers series while SNK produces Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown. For rivals, they have many similarities, which allows them to finally bring together the two universes, in a similar way to the way Capcom brought their Marvel and Street Fighter worlds in 1996's X-Men vs. Street Fighter. The crossover takes place in three games; the arcade SNK vs. Capcom, and two games on Neo Geo Pocket Color: SNK vs. Capcom - Match of the Millenium and Card Fighters Clash. Capcom is producing the arcade version, while SNK is handling the handheld area.

Gameplay

Four attack buttons
One of the greatest differences between the games produced by the two companies is that SNK fighters use four buttons in a row, while most Capcom games employ six buttons in two rows. SNKvsC will use four buttons, since it will translate better to the Dreamcast control pad, which only has four digital buttons. The Capcom characters will relinquish their Medium Punch and Medium Kick buttons. Instead, the medium attacks will be performed using a light attack with the joystick. No word on whether the buttons are set in one or two rows.

SNK-ISM and CAP-ISM
The astute eye will notice that the screenshots have small indicators at the top which read 'SNK-ISM' and 'CAP-ISM'. While there is no official news on what these mean, it is fair to say they operate similar to SF Alpha 3's ISM system, whereby the fighter's abilities, especially in regard to super combos are different. This would allow the fighters from each universe to play in either style, which sounds very exciting. Despite the 'vs.' in the title, SNK vs Capcom will not play like Marvel vs. Capcom, so no air combos. Double supers haven't been ruled out though, and dashing seems to be in.

Team Battle
There will be some form of team battle. On the Neo Geo Pocket Version you can choose from 1 on 1 (Street Fighter Alpha), 2 on 2 (Marvel vs. Capcom) or 3 on 3 (King of Fighters). 'Team Battle' should be the second of these options, and it would seem foolish not to include the third in the arcade.

Fighters

Six fighters on each side have been announced so far, along with screenshots. The game is supposed to be 'King of Fighters vs. Street Fighter', so it's unlikely Samurai Shodown or Darkstalkers characters will be in. However it's been hinted characters with weapons, as in Samurai Shodown and Last Blade could be included - or it might just mean Vega and Cody. Hmmm.

Capcom
Capcom provides Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chunli, Zangief and Blanka. One notices these are all 'core' fighters perhaps besides Blanka, and all were in 1991's Street Fighter II. One hopes more Street Fighter Alpha characters will be in. Street Fighter III fighters would absolutely rock, but that would mean a sprite redraw (since they are a different size) which Capcom historically hates and trouble with timeline (Alpha and III take place at least fifteen years apart). Note that in the screenshots, Chun Li is the only one out of the Capcom fighters to use a 'classic' color.

SNK
On the SNK side are Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, Mai Shiranui, Benimaru, Raiden and Terry Bogard. I don't know much about them because I'm a Capcom player, but I do know that these are pretty much 'core' fighters. I don't have any particular feelings about this list, as far as I'm concerned they're just punching bags for the Street Fighters (joking).

Miscellaneous
Overall there will be twenty to thirty characters. There will be two bosses, one from each universe. King of Fighters '99 and Marvel vs. Capcom both have helper systems, so it's possible they could be in SNK vs. Capcom. Unfortunately, these will be no new or original characters 'this time around' - so we'll probably have to wait for SNK vs. Capcom 2. Sigh.

Wish List

New characters. Please. And some SFIII characters (I don't feel Darkstalkers or Samurai Shodown characters would be right...). Redraw every character using a cool board like CPSIII or Naomi. Roll Akuma, Ken and Ryu into one character again like in Marvel vs. Capcom. Give Zangief a QCF + P Spinning Pile Driver. Parrying, Alpha Counters, Push Blocks, EX moves, SFIII's super jumps and KOF's charging up. Fei Long. And PLEASE give us the option of using six buttons (Six-ISM?)

SNK vs. Capcom will appear simultaneously on Arcade and Dreamcast in the second quarter of 2000.
