Cows go MOO and Computers go MUD.

by Armando Ladron de Guevara Alvarado

MUD stands for Multi-User Dungeon. In a general view its a bunch of rooms where you can play a Role Playing Game in real time with people on the Internet.

To use a MUD you must log into a MUD Server with a client (I suggest ZMUD available at T.U.C.O.W.S.) and from there you log in with your own unique Character to play with. You explore with it the entire MUD World entering diffrent rooms and meeting diffrent Non-Player Characters and Characters.

Normaly you would interact on an on-line game, but there are some MUD's that is more like a Chat Room than anything else... you could call it a Chat House :).

The gaming atmosphere varies much from one server to another and can be from Fantasy (The most popular) to Sci-Fi (Including Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Battletech).

I visited about 15 diffrent servers (From all Categories) and found out from the Server Manager that they don't get a lot of people on-line (I counted no more than 10 people on-line on the same server at any time), it seems that the popularity of MUD's is only in a small audience.
