Feeling is Beliving

by Armando Ladron de Guevara Alvarado

Well people, I decided to try something different in my articles this time. I decided to write something useful for all you DMs and GMs out there.

Have you ever asked yourself if your players actually believe that they are inside a dungeon, or out on a stroll in the fields or in a spooky castle filled with cobwebs? Well probably many players do not and never actually complain because it has never been in their mind before. But if you are an adventurous DM (and I know you are or you wouldn't be playing Adventures on a Fantasy set) I suggest playing with this part that people rarely use, the subconscious.

Playing with this part of the brain to fool people is not new and many people have been using it for many decades now. Most of those people are movie makers and they manipulate the subconscious by making the movie-goer believe they are part of the movie by using music, background sounds, etc. This is what people call "mood" or "setting the mood".

Now you can use this to enhance your gaming experience. I won't give you many examples because I believe that some types of information and experience people must learn by themselves. But lets say that your players are in a dark dungeon, then set the lights low and if you want close all windows and turn the humidity up a little. Or if you are in a field then open all the windows and if possible doors to let the breeze in and be able to hear the birds sing. To contact the author about this article click here.
