1825: A new game derived from 1829

The new features.
A totally modular game built up from Units and optional Kits.
Alternative companies become available simultaneously.
A more dynamic stock market.
Many new designs of Extension Kit.

It is well known that Hartland have developed some significant improvements to '1829' over the years but these have not been added to the standard game because they involve revised parts and new rules. The time has come to make a clean break with the original and make all these new features available to games players with a new game.

This is called 1825 to prevent any possible confusion with the rules of '1829', and is a complete replacement of the earlier game. Most players will wish to know what the changes are and why they have been made. Many people will then wish to acquire the new game because it really is a great deal better than its predecessor.

The most frequent criticisms of '1829' are:

It takes too long to play

Players are sometimes unlucky and are denied the chance of running a railway

The stockmarket is fairly placid, particularly in the closing stages of the game.

'1829' also encourages some quite unrealistic routes, but no-one seems too concerned about this!

All these points have received attention

Any of the three basic Units played on its own provides a compact game for a small number of players. Each rarely lasts longer than three hours. Full details of the scope of each Unit is given later.

With several companies becoming available at the same time people have a greater chance of starting a company. There are only two or three such companies in any individual Unit but if several Units are combined together, to cater for more players, the choice is wider.

The Dynamic Stockmarket allows a faster appreciation in share values when this is justified by a high earning, but low priced, share. This maintains a high incentive to trade in shares throughout the game because even a low priced share can suddenly become worth having and high priced, but sluggish shares are no longer the game winners they used to be.

The design of the '1829' board, surprisingly, tended to encourage some unrealistic routes. A number of small changes in the board has collectively led to a great improvement in realism without loss of playability, in fact they seem to have enhanced it.

First Release: UNIT 1, South Eastern England, full details below

Advance information on the new expansion kits is found below

Unit 1: South Eastern England

Unit 1 shows the area of England and Wales east of Cardiff and south of Norwich. This includes the London and Birmingham areas and features the old Southern Division of the LONDON & NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY, which used to be based at Wolverton in what is now Milton Keynes, the GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY and the four companies that were most heavily involved in commuter lines into London: the GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY, LONDON AND SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY, SOUTH EASTERN AND CHATHAM RAILWAY and the LONDON, BRIGHTON AND SOUTH COAST RAILWAY. Several other railways ran in this region and three of them: the MIDLAND RAILWAY, GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, and the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY appear in Unit 2. There remain two important regional companies: the London Tilbury & Southend and the Metropolitan, and these could lead to an interesting future Extension Kit.

Each of the three basic Units includes a map board, shares in the relevant railway companies, yellow, green and russet tiles (for phases 1 to 3), trains of types '2', '3', '4', and '5', tokens, money, Company Credits, rule book and a simplified Share Price Index for the companies featured.

The addition of an M1 (Supplementary Tiles) Kit, M3 (Phase 4) Kit and an M4 (Steam Packet Lines) Kit will bring the game to a form closely similar to the old '1829'. The addition of further kits will take the game far beyond this standard and the addition of other Units and Regional Kits will extend the game to any other area of the country.

Other add-ons are planned: the game is a long way from reaching a state where stagnation is imminent. The faithful can expect new features and some new twists to the rules as the range unfolds. All these things are being done for quite deliberate purposes and not simply because they are possible. '1825' will take Hartland into the next Century. The question many existing enthusiasts will be asking is - 'If I have an '1829' do I need an '1825'?' There is no clear cut answer. It has never been part of Hartland's philosophy to render things obsolete, and several of the planned extension kits could certainly be applied with advantage to an '1829' game. However, board geometry is going to count against this process being entirely stisfactory, and the players will find themselves having to juggle with the rules to an increasing degree as the system develops. The most significant thing about '1825' is its adaptability from compact game to mega-game. We believe that most active players will want to change sooner or later.

Other Rule Revisions

The 'To', not 'Through' rule for services into other companies' base stations is used, as in nearly all other '18XX' games.

The Survey Parties are now only an optional feature.

The #52 tile and its interesting russet coloured equivalents replace the more restricted #10.

The returns on the four initial Private Companies have been revised and the Liverpool & Manchester is now a reasonable proposition.

Revised share prices have cut the LB&SC down to size and redressed the insults levelled at the Great Eastern and the Lancashire & Yorkshire, which were two very important companies.
