The Depot: 1829 Variants

Three types of 1829 variants exist: the official extensions published by Hartland Trefoil; variants which use the existing board, but change the rules in some respect (or combine the boards; and those which use the money and tiles, but introduce a new board.

Official Extensions from Hartland Trefoil

There are six (four still in print) extensions:
MSK-1: Added 6 tiles: 2 of #60 (grey) and 4 of #67 (grey and russet)
MSK-2: Added 9 trains: 3 of type 3T, 2 of type 6, 2 of type 2+2, and 2 of type 4+4E.
MSK-3: Updated the rulebook and added 4 pound notes to the game. (Out of Print)
MSK-4S: A bookkeeping program for the Southern board for the Commodore Pet. (Out of Print)
MSK-5: Added 8 tiles: 2 of #55 (yellow), 2 of #56(yellow), 2 of #69 (1853-style, not 1830 style -yellow), and 2 of #11 (green)
MSK-6: Added 8 tiles (3 of #52, 1 of #64, 1 of #65, 1 of #66, 1 of #67, and 1 of #68.)

While these are still in print, do not expect them to be easy to find, especially in the United States. You may have to order from the UK.

Original Board Variants

Richard Gooch apparently was the first to publish a set of rules for combining the two 1829 boards. While I have not seen these rules, both of the combined board variants below start from this base. (If anyone has a set of these rules and would like to send it to the Depot, it would be greatly appreciated!)

Stuart Dagger built on Richard Gooch's set of rules for combining the two 1829 boards and has added a dynamic, 1830-style stock market, and a couple of other rules changes.

John Wilman and Steve Jones also built their set of rules for combining the two 1829 boards on Richard Gooch's original set.

All known combined board variants use the same map set-up. (39.2k)

Stuart Dagger has also published an alternative share price movement rule. This originally appeared in a pbm magazine, but later appeared in Games International.

New Board Variants

Especially in Germany, play-by-mail and play-by-email 18XX is very popular. Many new maps and rules add-ons have been devised for the 1829 rules and parts. There is no guarantee that this list is complete: new ones are being devised all the time.

1829E - 1829 Express. An official northern board variant.
1829I - 1829 Intercity. A combined board variant using the Express variant.
1829LE - 1829 Lemmings Express. Allows 1829 to be played in four to five hours.
1835 - Set in Germany. Not to be confused with Michael Meier-Bachl's 1835.
1836 - Set in France.
1837 - Set in Austro-Hungary. Not to be confused with the other game with this title.
1837 - Set in Russia. Not to be confused with the other games with this title.
Berliner Stadtbahn 1986 - Set in Berlin.

BRD 1990 - Set in Germany.
As more information becomes available on these variants, they will get their own pages.
