1874 is a game set in the Lake Superior regions of Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan. It covers the iron ore mining and hauling operations that have been an integral part that regions economy.

The game introduces mine "1+" trains as well as standard number trains. Because of these, certain cities have two values, one for mining trains and one for "number" trains.

Regional railroads are included, with rules for their being acquired by the larger "public" railroads or their merging to form a new "public" railroad.

Most of the 1870 stock mechanics are included, but there are some differences. Companies may float bonds to help finance operations, but incur the obligation of per/OR interest.

1874 is currently undergoing a major revision as the original version had too much dead space on one part of the board and overcrowding on the other. A lot of the "regional" railroad rules have been reworked as the original version suffered from discontinuities that led to singularity strategies.
