...a rather tragic tale to a tragic hero. Dan Hibiki, son of Go Hibiki, was crushed when he saw his father be slain at the hands of Sagat during the first Street Fighting tournament. He was left without any family with which to live with (though rumors of a sister abound). His stay with Ken and Ryu's sensei, Master Gouken, was brief in that he felt he could do better on his own, incorporating both his father's teachings in Shotokan karate as well as his own refinements. His own ambition and desire to learn his own techniques became his downfall. Most of his special techniques, those that incorporate the use of ki or ki enhancement, were either ineffective or useless against knowledgeable opponents. His super techniques, those which used massive amounts of ki at any time, were much more effective, though their range of attack was something to be desired. But his two trademark techniques, the Hisshou Burai Ken, and the Otoko Michi, are both very risky to execute. Yet they have earned him some respect in certain fighting circles. Though he fights much like a Shotokan, he is not. His attacks are based on those of Shotokan, with a touch of his own finesse (if that's what it could be called).
...upon his first engagement with Sagat, he was humiliated. Sagat wasted no time in putting Mr. Hibiki into his place. He grabbed Dan by the face with his massive tree-trunk hands and tossed him. That only burned a brighter fire inside of Dan. But this fire slowly changed from a mere fighter seeking revenge on a loved on to a person of pure vengeance, hatred and anger. As he retrained harder and better than ever, he began screaming out random taunts at opponents that he defeated. He slowly began winning more, and as he did his taunts increased in both quantity and quality. Soon his image was more notorious for his taunts than his techniques. Though he didn't let it show, it hurt him. Striving for vengeance, only to be mocked at by those he challenged. Again, his anger increased at both himself, and those who mocked him. Eventually, he came to defeat Sagat one-on-one and was granted the revenge he sought so desperately. He came to open up a martial arts academy founded under his own new technique of fighting, "Saikyo ryu". Working with the hype of his underdog victory, he attained much popularity in his dojo and for some time was pleased with what he accomplished.
...however, what Dan didn't realize was some untapped power within him. The Hisshou Burai Ken, the Chohatsu Densetsu, and certainly the Otoko Michi were not techniques any sense of the word. They were more like fits of anger that rushed out of his body as powerful ki bursts. The Hisshou he could understand as a pure rage attack, with no rhyme or reason as to how or why it happens, only that it is summoned when his adrenaline rush is maximized. The Chohatsu Densetsu was an extension of his other taunts, but his arrogance manifested itself into ki and enabled him to taunt five times in a row, almost involuntarily. But the strangest of them was the Otoko Michi. It strangely resembled Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu technique, but was a complete opposite in execution. It was visible to the naked eye; you hold the opponent from the back, and the ensuing attack of ki expulsion leaves only the faintest of life left in the user; but it doesn't have the potential to kill, like the Shun Goku Satsu. There is too much similarity between the two techniques to ignore. That's where Dan began to realize his "evil intent". Though not able to wield it at first, Dan slowly came to realize its potential. If he was as strong as Akuma, no one could finish him off, and his taunts could be that much better.
...like trying to combine oil and water, such a blending of a dark power with the worthlessness of taunting couldn't have been worse; but on the good side, since Dan will never, and could never, embrace the full potential of the "evil intent", his life is not at risk for any of the techniques. Practiced in secret, only a select few know of this side of Dan Hibiki. Taking necessary precautionary measures, he strives to perfect his newfound power and wield it for the good of, himself. And for his dojo.
Some would say he is a mockery of Akuma, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Evil Dan has his own distinct characteristics, as well as kanji incarnations. He now joins the ranks of the other Shotokan's who have succumbed to the "evil intent", Akuma, Ryu, Sakura, and possibly, Sheng Long?
