Inquisitor Laertes Asmith is an embittered man who's only goal in life is no less than the total anihilation of all things Chaotic. He serves the Emperor with an iron fist, ruthlessly seeking out anything even remotely daemonic (which includes rogue psykers, chaos cults, etc.) He is driven by a hatred of Chaos so strong that he is often blinded to his own personal safety, and only good fortune has protected him thus far from an untimely demise. Distrusting all others, even his own fellow Inquisitors, Laertes is most often seen operating alone, with no warband to back him up, trusting only in his own skills and equipment to get the job done.
To truly understand what drives Laertes Asmith, you have to delve deep into his own history. While reports are sketchy, and Laertes himself is loathe to discuss his childhood, what is clear is that at least one member of his family was possessed by a powerful daemon, and slaughtered all of his kin. Other daemons had been called down to his homeworld by a Chaos Cult, leaving very few people alive on the planet. Laertes would have been killed as well, but he was saved by the timely intervention of an Inquisitor and almost an entire company of Grey Knights. While the remaining survivors were purged due to danger of daemonic contamination, the Inquisitor recognized a fire that burned behind Laertes' eyes and spared him, sending him to the Inquisition to be trained.
