If you can't get the game to start or if you get a black screen after the introductory video in which you see Detective Lennie Briscoe walking throught the crime scene...

There is a problem with your video card working with the game. First you must determine what kind of video card you have: Click Start, then Run, and type in "DXDIAG" (including the quotes), then click the OK button. Once the DirectX Diagnostic Tool appears, click on the Display tab. In the device box, the Name and Chip Type of your video card will be listed.

810/815 Patch

If you have determined that you have the Intel 810 or 815 card, we have a patch that should fix your problem. Please do not download this patch UNLESS you have determined that you have this specific video chip set. If you are in doubt, please call our technical support line and they will assist you. Patch #1, the 810/815 Patch, can be downloaded at: http://www.legacyinteractive.com/support/patches.php

When you use this patch, the game will run in a smaller window in the top left corner of your screen. Before starting a new game, go to Options from the main menu and turn off background sounds and set 360 degree panning locations to faster rather than higher quality.

Also make sure to update your drivers. Intel's driver site listed here: http://www.intel.com/intel/nav/support.htm

If you have Windows XP, make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed (http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp) and the Java VM installed (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html).

DirectX7 Patch

If you don't have the 810/815 video card, most likely, the problems you are experiencing are related to the video card not being DirectX 8.1 compatible. We have created a patch that enables the game to be played on video cards that support DirectX 7 or higher. Patch #3, the DirectX7 Patch, can be downloaded at: http://www.legacyinteractive.com/support/patches.php

Also make sure to update your drivers. Instructions listed here: Update Drivers.

If you have Windows XP, make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed (http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp) and the Java VM installed (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html).

If you get a black screen as soon as you select "Play"...

Please reinstall the version of Quick Time that is on the CD.

Also, if you have Windows XP, make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed (http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp) and the Java VM installed (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html).

If you have intermittent crashes while playing the game…

Download the latest Java VM: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Also make sure to update your drivers. Instructions listed here: Update Drivers.

If you have Windows XP, make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed (http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp).

If you are experiencing slow, freezing moments or spinning in the 3D search scenes with the mouse control…

We created a patch that will fix the problem. Please download Patch #2, the Efficiency Skill & Mouse Sensitivity Patch, at: http://www.legacyinteractive.com/support/patches.php

If your entire game is very slow or freezes after playing for a while…

  • Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements for the game. Specifically, make sure you have at least an 8 MB DirectX compatible video card, at least 96 MB of system memory, and at least 700 MB free disk space on the hard drive.
  • In the game, go to the Options menu and change the Scenes to the Faster Mode, and turn the Music Off.
  • Make sure you have Java VM. You can download this from http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html
  • Close down all other applications when running the program.
  • Also make sure to update your drivers. Instructions listed here: Update Drivers.

If other programs are interrupting your game…

It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Norton Utilities for Win95, internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.

In Windows 95/98: To close your background applications, press CTRL+ALT+DEL once. This will bring up the Close Programs dialog box. To End Task on a program, highlight it's name in the list and click the End Task button. End Task on all but Explorer and Systray.

If you are still having problems getting the game to work correctly…

Update Drivers

You should update your video card and audio card drivers often. Check with the manufacturer of your system or card to obtain the latest drivers. The majority of them have websites where the latest drivers can be downloaded for no charge, along with instructions on how to properly update their particular hardware. Driver sites for popular video cards include:

If your card manufacturer isn't listed here, you can probably find your card manufacturer's web site by reading the documentation that came with your computer, or contacting your vendor.

Second, install the Java VM: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Third, make sure your version of Windows is up-to-date. Microsoft's Windows Update page is: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If nothing new is happening in the game for a long time...

You should probably start over or load a previously saved game. Be sure to save your game before every interview. Most interviews reveal key information, if you get all the way through them and don't ask too many irrelevant questions. You can tell if you did not get all the key information if you hear a negative comment when viewing the witness summary. If nothing new is happening for a long time, you also may need to use your Case File to order a lab test, research report, surveillance report or a psychiatric evaluation to find out new information.

If you keep running out of time as a detective...

We have created a patch that will give that will change the Efficiency Skill and give you much more time. You can download Patch #2, the Efficiency Skill & Mouse Sensitivity Patch, at: http://www.legacyinteractive.com/support/patches.php After you install the patch, when you start the game and are selecting your skills, be sure to select "Efficiency".

If you received a message that a report was ready to be reviewed, but when you went to talk with the person about it, it still said "Pending"...

This means you still need to complete one or more steps in order to get the person to talk about the evidence. This will happen with the gold key research report and the Barney Ruggerio surveillance report.

If you've found out about another character, but they didn't appear on the map...

It's likely that their name is on the map, but you have not seen it. Be sure to scroll the map down so you can access the lower part of it.
