Prologue: The Resurrection of Aeris
Cloud watched as the girl held up the rare Galaxy Materia to the sky.
"I call upon you, Galaxy!" she said. As she said this, a porthole opened
up in front of her in a
burst of soft, green light. Both the blinded Cloud and Messiah were
thrown back a few feet
from the light. Cloud shadowed his eyes as he looked toward the light
and saw a figure. The
face shadowed in contrast to the light, the figure had sleek gold hair
curled at the tips and wore
a long silver dress, tight at the waist.
The light finally died down and the face was revealed. It was a young
woman with the most
beautiful blue eyes Cloud had ever seen. Her face was perfect, light
and fair. There was a warm
smile on her face. She looked like a goddess.
"I am the one you seek, Galaxy," said the woman, "Who thy be the one who summoned me?"
Messiah stepped forward. "I did, Galaxy."
Galaxy nodded. "And what your wish may be?"
Messiah took Cloud's hand and approached her. "It is he who the wish
is for," she said.
Messiah turned to Cloud and said, "Go ahead, Cloud."
Cloud was speechless. He didn't know what to say. Galaxy stared into
his eyes, her smile
turning to a look of sympathy.
"You've lost a love to evil," Galaxy confirmed, in a sympathetic voice.
Cloud lowered his head,
nodding. Messiah lain a reassuring hand on his shoulder. Even though
she never met Aeris, it
caused a stab of pain in her heart.
"I shall revive her for you," Galaxy said.
"Really?!" Cloud exclaimed, "Thank you!"
"Cloud, she isn't finished," Messiah hissed at him. Cloud turned to
Galaxy, fearing she would
take back the offer. He'd never forgive himself.
Galaxy still had her smile.
"She will be revived," Galaxy said with slowness in her voice, "But
she'll be reborn as a baby, so
she can live a new life. She will have no memories of her past life,
but she'll know you and the
ones who loved her because she is so attached to the ones she knew.
This'll also give you
another chance to protect her, just as you promised her."
"And," Messiah added, "You have to take care of her and love as you did."
"Do you abide to this, Cloud?" Galaxy asked the mercenary. Cloud lowered
his head and
thought. He promised her he would take care of her- while she was alive.
Now he had a chance
to make it right again.
Cloud turned to the goddess and said, "Yes, I abide by my promise to
take care of her and love
her just as I always did." Galaxy smiled.
"One question," said Messiah, "Does Aeris agree to this?" Galaxy nodded.
"She is willing to," she said. Messiah smiled, understanding.
Galaxy turned toward the lake in which Cloud had buried Aeris and held
out her arms. With a
slow gracefulness, Galaxy lifted her arms.
Cloud looked toward the lake and saw a pink crystal rise from the water,
following the
movement of Galaxy's arms. The goddess guided her arms toward Cloud.
The crystal, as if
following a silent command, floated to Cloud and hovered in front of
him.
"What do I do?" Cloud asked Galaxy.
"Hold out your arms," Galaxy said in a haunting voice.
Cloud, hesitating, held out his arms. The crystal began to take shape
right before his eyes. It
became a baby girl, wrapped in a pink, soft blanket. It floated slowly
into Cloud's waiting arms.
He held her softly, afraid to drop her or hold her tight. Messiah could
tell Cloud's arms were
shaking.
"Relax Cloud," Messiah whispered, touching his arm. The two looked down
upon the precious
life Cloud held in his arms. The baby girl yawned and opened her eyes,
showing the emerald
glow Cloud had seen before she died. The baby gave a giggle as she
saw Cloud's face. Cloud
felt his heart melt. She was so beautiful…
"I'm glad you are happy," said Galaxy, who had watched this event unfold
before her silently,
"Messiah, would you like to make a wish?"
"I'll save it for when I really need it," Messiah replied. Galaxy's
blue eyes dimmed. Her body
began to dematerialize little by little. She was fading.
"I have to leave now," she said. She fixed her eyes on Cloud and baby
Aeris and smiled. "Take
care of her Cloud, You'll be a good "father" to her. And remember the
promise."
"Yes," Cloud solemnly. Galaxy faded until nothing but the glow of her
blue eyes were left. They
too faded. The porthole opened again, the light emerging. A small marble-like
ball floated out
toward Cloud and lingered in front of him. He grabbed it. It was a
ball of white materia. The
same one that was on Aeris's hair ribbon. The porthole closed and all
was silent again.
"We might as well be going," said Messiah, "Your friends may be worried
about you." Cloud
was not listening. He was still holding baby Aeris in his arms. He
was smiling.
"Thank you Galaxy," Cloud said silently, "Thank you."
