Bijou
2003-2005

Bijou was my fourth and last hamster. After my previous hamster DJ died, I was thinking about not getting another hamster. My birthday was the week after DJ's death though, and so I began to reconsider. Two days after my birthday, on April 26, 2003, my sister got Bijou for me for my birthday. She looked just like DJ and so it was almost as if DJ had never left. Pixie and Bijou were the two hamsters I owned for the longest time, living in separate cages. Bijou would sometimes bite playfully, but not hard. She was actually very gentle and playful, and she loved to get out of her cage and play. Her personality was quite different than DJ's, and she was also different from her in that she never grew a whole lot; she stayed a tiny ball of fluff. One thing I quickly noticed about her was that she was extraordinarily cute; every little thing she did, every little pose she made, every little gesture of hers was absolutely adorable. After Pixie died, Bijou was the only hamster I had left, and so I cherished her greatly. At one point, she got sick with diarrhea and I feared that she had wet tail, and so I took her to the vet. She quickly got better and I was relieved to find out that she didn't have wet tail. That was the first and only time I ever took a hamster to the vet. In her last days, I really began to bond with her, as I played with her a lot, using my keychain as a toy her size for her to play with. It wasn't long afterwards that she died on the morning of August 27, 2005. My heart was shattered when I found her in her cage no longer breathing, yet unlike with Pixie and Buddy, she did not seem to have a several-hour long session of pain and heavy breathing before her death. Of all of the hamsters' deaths, Bijou's was the most peaceful. I'm happy to have had her with me for more than two years and I will miss her. The moments we shared were priceless.
