Macbelious
Macbelious is one of the world's permiere cities of law. A city founded long ago on the mainland
as a haven for those who were not gifted enough to practice magic, psychic powers, or any of the
sort, as well as seeking sanctuary from tyranny, have eventually led to the creation of one of
the few democratic nations in the world. Through mostly sheer luck, it managed to be out of the
way of barbarian raids or other nations as it grew in size and power. However, in order to
achieve the order that the nature of being a democracy couldn't give it, the city-state of
Macbelious has eventually had to create more and more laws until it became near impossible for
anyone to do anything in that city without extensive knowledge of the law or a legal consultant.
As such, the majority of Macbelious's citizens consists of lawyers, writers, and other
intellectual classes. Having a lawyer by your side in Macbelious is the equivalent of having a
big burly bodyguard in a city of extreme crime and violence.
The location and topography of Macbelious is actually kinda boring. Macbelious is located on the
main continent (assuming we HAVE a main continent) though somewhere around the edges (enough to
be slightly out of the way but not fully). It's located in a big boring plain somewhat close to
the ocean and the city itself actually looks kinda normal with some slight technological things
here and there but not much at all. About the only thing which stands out is that there are
a lot of mini-towers (The mideival equivalent of a skyscraper), otherwise it's a pretty plain
place aesthetically speaking. More plain than a plain town even (the brick houses aren't even
variable colors and everything's incredibly... gray. The culture is another story, though.
Macbelious is pretty crowded with merchants selling, trading, negotiating, and
watching their lawyers argue with each other. Huge legal battles break out quite often in the
marketplace.
Here's an example of one of the fifty katrilbillion laws you'll find in Macbelious
No walking in a dark alley on full moons after ten with a party of less than three people
and an average age of twenty-five, permission void in the case of children under three and
any of the following races are not included in either the party number amount or the age
average: Anything classified as nonhuman, fairies, familiars, anything classified by the
spirit laws as spiritual, and deities.
Most of these laws are only passively enforced and thus are more of a reason for the government
to hunt down people it doesn't like when it suspects them of bigger things (they got Al Capone
for tax fraud, after all). The emphasis on law is so extreme that violence in Macbelious is
practically unheard of. If a criminal or thug should accost you in an alley, they would do so
not by physical force but by figuring out a random law which you happened to break (and you WILL
have broken one unless you were a master of legal knowledge) and forcing you to pay them over it
or else they'd report you. Your lawyer bodyguard would be there to find loopholes for you to
escape through in case of said incrimination.
Macbelious is largely neutral and though it stays out of war and politicalities with other
nations, it is not an isolated city at all. Quite the contrary, Macbelious, due to the nature
of being a democratic state, is a powerful international trade center. It relies on other
nations almost completely. Due to its lack of a competent military, Macbelious's defense
against any opposing nation is to refer to international law and use propaganda to incite other
nations against its enemies. It rarely comes to that though since other nations would have
little reason to want to conquer a nation like Macbelious. There isn't much a nation would want
with a nation of lawyers, after all, and being a democracy, Macbelious is extremely unhostile to
other nations. War requires too much paperwork to operate efficiently in that nation. When
negotiations fail or an army of beasts too stupid and evil to even think about reason comes
along, Macbelious must resort to mercenaries and the heavy walls surrounding the city.
Macbelious is one of the higher, but by far not the highest, technology-based nations. Magic
rarely is used by any of its citizens, unless you count the magic of their speaking ability,
which is the weapon of choice for lawyers. When it comes down to violence though, they are
generally armed with muskets or other gun variants. While they could aim well, they obviously
aren't fit for physical combat at all (Basically, in combat a lawyer is exactly like a mediator
in FFTactics)
Macbelious is open to the public, though it's unheard of to not have a legal consultant for
protection while there.
The walled city of Macbelious is situated in the middle of a large plain.
It requires a very large army (which will probably be spotted from quite a
distance away) to surround the city, and even then the enemy's ranks will be
pretty thinned out, though it also makes Macbelious a pain in the ass to
defend. Thus instead of keeping a large military unit stationed in the city
(including the default 30+ amount of Mercenary Vespars required for large scale
warfare), Macbelious only keeps a small amount of military in the city.
Enough to hold any invader off long enough for Macbelious to frantically
scream for help like a little child being attacked by a mean bully (which is
actually kind of the case for anyone that chooses to invade Macbelious)
