This web page project was begun in 1997 as a
celebration of the the
survival and resurgence of the
Sturt Football Club of the SANFL.
The year 1997 saw the club bounce back from the
lowest point in its history to make the finals after eight years bottom. Two
years before it had finished the season winless and crippled with debt it had
been given two weeks to raise $250,000 or be evicted from the
league.
To our eternal gratitude do we give thanks to a committed
team of former players led by Phil Sanders and Matt Benson, who refused
to let this happen. They orchestrated an financial plan which saved the
club. I like many of the Sturt faithful of that time shall never forget
the fund raising rallies at Unley Oval during that desperate fortnight.
By some miracle the funds where raised and Sturt survived.
A grand final appearance and minor premiership in
1998 only wet the appetite for the completion of our revival in the 2002
season, when after 26 frustrating years the premiership flag returned home to
Unley!!!!.
