ROUND SEVEN OF 2001 SEASON - MATCH REPORT

Alberton Oval - 12th May 2001

By Chris Hisee

Sturt have been handed a demoralising defeat by the Port Magpies by 50 points. Sturt started well, constantly chasing down the Magpies players and winning holding the ball decisions but missed a few opportunities when going forward. Sturt just couldn't get any decent delivery into the forward lines and when it was down there the umpire often pulled a Port free kick out of nowhere. The third quarter was a struggle for both teams with Sturt not adding a goal and Port just 1. In the last quarter however Sturt capitulated and Port piled on the goals to crush Sturt by 50 points. As usual Dean Woosnam was great in defence but was forced to go forward due to the lack of goals being scored. Damian Squire constantly gathered the ball and the very consistent Toby Thurstans was reliable in defence but too much was left to too few and Sturt must beat South at Noarlunga next week or it's finals dreams will be crushed already.
