ROUND ELEVEN OF 2001 SEASON MATCH REPORT Unley Oval - 9th June 2001 By Chris Hisee |
Sturt have punished a lack-lustre West Adelaide combination
to the tune of 90 points. Sturt came out firing bombing away at the goals with
Stephen White providing a great tall presence and forward pocket Brodie
Atkinson always looking dangerous. Sturt's on ball brigade of Damian Squire,
Tim Weatherald and Bruce Lennon ran riot throughout the match amassing 104
possessions between them. In the second quarter the Double Blues broke the
Bloods' backs by adding 5.5 to 3.3, courtesy of some great drive form the
midfield and tough defence led by Dean Woosnam, 29 possessions from a half back
flank, consistent contributor Toby Thurstans and the rebounding Seamus Maloney
who notched up 21 possessions before going off before three quarter time. Such
was Sturt's dominace Brett Howman, who had not scored a goal in his previous 26
games, managed to score a major playing from the back pocket. The half time
break did nothing to stop Sturt's run as the Double Blues bombarded the forward
line to add 7.7 to West's 1.2. Big Aaron Bishop came on the ground in bursts
all day and provided a great presence in the third quareter taking a few good
grabs and through consistent teamwork the team provided plenty of scoring
opportunities which were capitalised on by players including Julian Burton, Stephen
White, Bruce Lennon and Tim Weatherald. The goal of the day came at the 12
minute mark where the ball was being thrown in inside of West's forward 50,
Conway tapped the ball to the ball to Andrew Whiteman who played on and
handpassd over to Damian Squire who inturn ran to the half backline and
handballed over to Michael Curtis, he broke one tackle, sped past another
player and handballed to Whiteman again who tapped the ball back to Curtis who
then finally handballed to White just outside the 50m line, White proced to
have a bounce then run and kick a sensational goal from just inside 50. The
final term was a formality but the Blues still piled on the goals thanks
largely to a dominating midfield and effective forward line to run out 90 point
winners.
