Round Twelve of 2001 Season

Yet another last quarter fade out has cost the Double Blues and important win, this time going down to Centrals at Unley. Thanks to some strong marking from Stephen White and good conversion, Sturt went into quarter time leading by 1 goal. Interestingly Sturt have been ahead at quarter time in every match this year for just three wins. The second quarter was very costly for the Blues with a lot of very simple shots for goal being missed, the 2 chief offenders being Tim Weatherald and Julian Burton who missed easy running shots with no pressure on them. Sturt managed 3.7 for the quarter and didn't switch on until halfway through the third quarter. Centrals were allowed to kick the first 4 goals of the third term and Sturt never regained the lead. Slack defence and poor midfield drive lost the match for Sturt with Centrals continually bombarding their forward line to put the match out of the Double Blue's reach within the first 10 minutes and at one satge were 32 points in the clear. Sturt was well served as usual by midfielder Bruce Lennon, who had to do the forwardline's work aswell, who kicked 3 goals and gathered 23 possessions. Michaerl Curtis was Sturt's best with 19 possessions playing from the pocket and forward along with Brodie Atkinson. Dean Woosnam provided much needed strength on the backline and Toby Thurstans kept his opponent quiet. The loss soured inspirational captain Chris Thredgold's 200th game.
