BDS - 04/25/00 18:24:22 My Email:comixcomix@hotmail.com Favorite Comic Book: The Micronauts vs Galactis | Comments: Proposal for the Destruction of The Comic Book Industry Whereas the mainstream comic book industry has become hopelessly mired in impenetrable self-reference, and in obsessive concern with the meaningless notion of “continuity”… And whereas these concerns take precedence over the concepts of “story”, “art”, or “entertainment value”… And whereas the casual reader and original audience for these products has been ignored, rejected, and even insulted… And whereas the industry as a whole concerns itself solely with the smallest faction of its potential customer base, and floods its own market with gimmicky, pointless, disposable product of no social value… It is the determination of Inept Concepts that said industry serves no valuable purpose whatsoever to its retailers, customers, or itself and as such should be systematically dismantled and cease the production and distribution of its products. Whereas such an occurrence is unlikely to come to pass from within, it is the further contention of Inept Concepts that the industry in question must, instead, be destroyed, legally and completely, from without. Attached to this proclamation is a step-by- tep progression as to how we, as comic book fans and professionals, will achieve this goal. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Imagine, if you will, the premiere of a new action-adventure motion picture. The movie is ludicrously over-marketed, released in several different versions, is poorly written and shot, and does not reach a satisfactory conclusion, but rather carries on in o an immediate sequel. In order to fully understand the events of the film, you must also watch four other movies that are to be released at roughly the same time, and also track down several other, previous pictures (some very rare and unavailable on vid o) and view them as well. Despite these obvious flaws, there is a small but obsessively loyal fan contingent that enjoys these movies. Unfortunately, if you ask them to help you understand what the films are about, they refuse, claiming you are not a “rea fan”. The producers and theatre owners adopt a similar attitude, and openly deride people who are not “hip” to their pictures. The above situation is inherently ridiculous and self-defeating. It is painfully obvious that these movies will eventually stop being produced because they will ultimately ostracize any and all potential new fans. Yet this is EXACTLY the state of the “com c book” industry today. Cigarettes may kill their consumers, but at least the groundwork for new customers has been laid. Anyone who is in any way a fan of the inherently American art form know as the comic book, whether they are drawn to adult-oriented books or juvenile, escapist superhero/fantasy, should realize that this art form is dying. Like some forgotten god, the gen e finds itself with fewer and fewer old adherents each year, and no new ones. Eventually these Ba’al worshippers will be gone, and with them, their holy idol. If this trend is to be halted and even reversed, a return must be made to the concept of the acc ssible single-issue comic book story, and the idea that most comics should be accessible to children. There are no other options. In order to achieve these goals, it is painfully obvious that the present-day mainstream comic book industry must be destroyed, with neither pity nor remorse. From its ashes, a new, purer, more rational outlook will grow of its own accord. INEPT CONCEPTS as outlined the following program, which all true fans of this art form will adopt. Those who do not adopt this program will be understood to be traitors and heretics, and will be dealt with as such. 1) Upon completion of the reading of this document, FAN will copy or print the following missive, sign and date it, and mail copies to both MARVEL COMICS INC. (Public Enemy #1) and DC COMICS (Public Enemy #2): Dear Publisher, As your publications have become increasingly convoluted and inaccessible, I would like to request the cancellation of all subscriptions to your products and inform you that I will no longer purchase any of your magazines or sundry spin-off products. Plea e refund me for the balance of my subscription. Thank you, (Your Name) Direct this notification to: MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT GROUP 387 Park Avenue South New York, NY 10016 E-Mail: mail@marvel.com DC COMICS 1700 Broadway New York, NY 10019 E-Mail: dcconline@aol.com 2) FAN will boycott and refuse to purchase all books featuring gratuitous gimmicks including, but not limited to; chrome covers, multiple alternate covers for magazines with identical interior content, and any ludicrous multi-magazine storylines that forc one to purchase books one normally would not read. 3) FAN will skip a single issue of each of his or her favorite comic magazine publications. The comic may be purchased, but should not be read until the subsequent issue is released. FAN will then attempt to read the new issue without reading the one that was “skipped”. If FAN finds the comic completely incomprehensible due to missing a SINGLE ISSUE, the title will be permanently dropped. 4) FAN will not begin collecting any new book from any major publisher that appears during this time. 5) After this weening period, which should last no more than three (3) months, FAN will PERMANENTLY AND COMPLETELY BOYCOTT AND REFUSE TO PURCHASE ANY AND ALL MAINSTREAM COMIC BOOK PUBLICATIONS. His or her comic book budget should remain roughly the same, ut should instead be invested in local retailer’s back issue stocks and/or new comics from smaller publishers. 6) If in any way questioned or harassed by BA’AL worshipers or other proletariats, FAN should explain away his or her actions as a result of “hypertime”. Questions and concerns about this project should be directed to us at comixcomix@hotmail.com Copyright 2000 Inept Concepts/Brad D. Sibbersen |

Shawn R. Lear - 04/04/00 08:08:17 My Email:XxJuggernaughtxX@aol.com Favorite Comic Book: Sentinels of Roadkill | Comments: Hi, I'm really looking for an artist for my comic. Of course, I don't have any money, so any artist that hooks up with me would have to work on the faith that we would get picked up, but I have already put in hours and hours of writing time so I think i 's fair for the artist to do the same. If supplies are a problem, I can help by them. My comic is somewhat complex. I usually need quite a bit of time to explain it. In a very brief overview, it is about a war between a fallen god and a living planet, with a carnivor rabbit trapped in a battle ready exoskeletal suit caught in the middle. Anyway, that's me. DO NOT OPEN IT (you already know what it is any way ..right?) this way it has a postmark on it and is proof that your drawings were created before anyone else was able to. |

Re: how do you stop someone from stealing your work? You don't. Anyone should realize that as far as writing goes, every story has already been done, the only thing original in anyone's writing anymore is in the presentation of the work, not t e actual content. You also have the ability to add a copyright notice at the end of each work submitted to you; ie such and such drawing is copyright such and such person at such and such date. You might even get Geocities to provide the copyright symbols on your page for this purpose- they did for a different page of mine where I was cowriting a screenplay. Anyway, I hope this might help you. Good luck with the page.
