How to read an entry.

Entries are grouped by household, and each entry consists of two sections.

The first section contains columnar information on each individual who was born in New Brunswick - surname, name, sex, age, religion, origin, occupation, marital status (MS), and where he or she appeared in the return, in the format district.subdistrict.page.line. 188.A.011.12 would refer to an entry found in District 188 (Cariboo, British Columbia), subdistrict a (Richfield, Barkerville, Lightning), page 11, line 12.

The second part the status of the individual(s) in the household, as well as any family or employees. Religion and origin are only noted if it is different from the individual(s) in the first section; relationship is to the head of family, not the individual. Origin was considered to descend through the father, and is only noted for children if their origin was different from their father's; if the father is listed in the second section and the children in the first, the father had the same origin as the children unless noted in his entry.

Dwelling is only noted when the family was living in a vessel or shanty, or was sharing a house outside of an urban area. Infirmities and other notes are noted when they occur, but literacy and school attendance aren't included here, due to the amount of time it would take to transcribe.

Information is copied as it appeared in the returns - abbreviations are listed as abbreviations; full words are entered as full words.

The tables below list the various abbreviations and terms used, and their meanings. Words in italics are the French words.
