What I think about things that people ask me to think about

What I think about...

Abortion

I am ambivalent towards abortion. In one respect, it is a form of doctor-assisted murder; in the other, it's a safeguard against unwanted children. If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, I can understand her wanting an abortion. If she's having wanton unprotected sex, then I think that's completely wrong. Couples who don't want babies shouldn't have unprotected sex.

One thing I am sure about is that abortion should not be affected by government legislation. It has too many aspects to have proper laws written on it.

God (Allah, Brahma, Yaweh, whatever)

I do not believe in a supreme being. That is not to say I am an atheist--for atheism only denies God's existance, while at the same time reinforcing it. I perceive "God" as a concept by which people explain that which they don't have answers for. This concept is being outdated by science.

I'm not saying that science should become the new religion; I would prefer that it didn't. Now God is a nice concept if you need something to live for, something to place faith and hope into. That's where I decided not to believe. I used to pray that to God for things to turn out the way that I wanted. It turned out that I wasn't putting my faith in God, I was putting it in myself. Rather than be "all that" and call myself God, I just cut out the middle man.

Homosexuality

I am totally unbiased towards people with "alternative sexual preferences", to be PC. Why should I treat them any differently than regular people? I don't understand why some people are so hateful towards them....

JonBenet Ramsey

As a new Boulder citizen, I hear all kinds of questions about that little girl (chatting online: "Hey, do u live wher that little girl was killed."). Frankly, I didn't even know about her until about five days after she was killed. Neither did anybody I've ever talked to. What's the big deal? I know it's sad, after all a five year-old was killed, but it happens all the time! Why should one girl, who happens to be tortured by her parents with make-up, dresses, voice lessons and beauty pageants, get more media coverage than any other little girls who are killed? Better yet, why should she get any more coverage than ME? or YOU?

Prejudice

Why act upon prejudice when there are so many reasons to hate a person on a more individual level?

Princess Diana's Death

I think that my attitude about Diana Spencer's death is best described by this article, which appeared in the September 10th issue of The Onion:
GEOPOLITICAL BALANCE OF POWER SOMEHOW UNAFFECTED BY DEATH OF PRINCESS
LONDON--In a development that has baffled experts, the geopolitical balance of power has been strangely unaffected by the death of Princess Diana, considered by many to be the world's most important person. According to reports, there have been no measurable changes in treaty alignments, trade agreements, defense budgets, poverty levels, international tariffs, taxation proposals, human-rights measures, world fiscal policy, education programs, deficit reduction, literacy rates, distribution of power, birth rates, public irrigation, disease research, pollution levels, distribution of wealth or any other major global trends since her death on Aug. 31. "I don't get it," said Oxford University professor Sir Jeremy Eton-Shropshire. "This is clearly one of the biggest news events of the century, yet it's almost as if the death of Diana is an event of no demonstrable significance."

Religion

If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm not what you'd call a religious person. Part of this is due to the inconvincability of myself, and part of it is that I think the idea of an omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient being is preposterous. But more is the idea of organized religion. Now don't get me wrong--I'm not totally against it. After all, it is a great way to meet people and learn values and morals. And if you feel you need to believe in something other than what you can see and feel, go to church. But from the few times I've been to church, I see the same thing. Some people there are crooks, cheaters, liars and scam artists. Lawyers, insincere politians, used-car salesmen, loan sharks (I know I'm being stereotypical, but these are just examples) all cheat people six days out of the week, but on Sunday go to church and put money in the plate, buying there share of land in the afterlife. To me, something's just wrong there. I do not believe that God [if there is one], he is not good. I believe God would be neutral.

As far as the Bible goes, I have read it. It's a good storybook, with lessons and morals. Beyond that...Well, I believe Jesus Christ was a real person. He has many present day likenesses--Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln.
