Meriwythr's Home
Lady Alice Drive, Kaerna
Meriwythr Truefriend arrived in the province of Zoluren in Arhat, 347. In the twelve years since he joined the Thieves’ Guild, he has managed to make something of a name for himself, but general opinions of his nature vary greatly. To some, he is an honourable gentleman who can be relied upon to lend assistance wherever it is needed. To others, he is a loud-mouthed troublemaker and a ruffian to boot.
Though Meriwythr has been rather open about his Guild since he was a Novice, he has never fit the generally accepted idea of a “Thief”. Mere days after joining a Guild, he was rushing to the defense of one lady or another (which proved to be very frustrating while he was still too “young” to physically defend anyone), getting into heated public debates about honour and assisting in the formation of a fledgling Order. Though Meri would have been noticed (something young Thieves are encouraged to AVOID) simply by the sheer force of his personality, he added to his visibility by running about The Crossing in a scarlet taffeta cape and a gold crown, and referring to himself as “Meriwythr Truefriend, Beloved Citizen of Elanthia”.
It wasn’t long, of course, before people began to view Meriwythr as a bit of a fool. The fledgling Order fell apart after Meriwythr got into a vicious argument with one of the other members (who very nearly killed Meriwythr). Meriwythr organized two grandly-planned “ambushes” on enemies of his Guild which failed spectacularly; by blind luck, Meriwythr managed to be the only one who wasn’t killed in either ambush, which did not go very far toward raising the esteem in which he was held by his fellow Guildmates. Meriwythr, after making a rather large (if not favorable) impression as a young Thief, began to fade into the background as time passed, spending more and more time alone.
During the Great Migration, Meriwythr’s dearest friend Midvale disappeared from the Realms. She has not been seen since. Meriwythr became even more of a hermit after Midvale left, and at times disappeared for months on end. It was during this period of time that he spotted a notice posted by an Elven Bardess named Lkhyna, who was looking
for music students. Meriwythr, who had been struggling to learn music on his own, sought her out and the two quickly became inseparable, first as a couple and then as platonic, but deeply close, friends.
Lkhyna died in the 354th year, walking the Starry Road as a result of an untreatable
disease. Meriwythr still grieves for her.
Meriwythr has two family members in the Three Provinces: Carys Felen, a second cousin, and Annys Aryllia, a first cousin, who came to Zoluren a few months before Meri but until recently refused to so much as speak to him. The reason for Meri and Annys' long-standing feud is not publically known, and in any case seems to be resolved, as the two are quite close. Both have joined the Court of Lord Rayth Blackmoore as his sworn vassals. In joining the Court, Meriwythr made public the fact that he and Annys are of noble blood. Meriwythr, though disinherited for reasons
unknown, is the eldest son of a Baron.
A recent event of note in Meriwythr’s life was his relationship with
Valquesta DeCarle, an Elven Moon Mage who left her home village fairly recently to come to The Crossing. Meriwythr and Valquesta were seen in each others’ company quite frequently, and more than a few people observed that the two seemed to be constantly at
odds with each other. Shortly after Meriwythr purchased his home in Kaerna, he found Valquesta dead on -- literally -- his front doorstep. Several people offered their aid, and they discovered that Valquesta had been murdered, though the murderer’s name was not revealed. Valquesta was resurrected, and Meriwythr disappeared for a month. When he returned, he ended his relationship with Valquesta, and the two are now quite hostile in
each others’ presence.
Meriwythr, despite being an incurable flirt, seems destined to be a bachelor. Though he
has many casual friends, he is close only to his cousins and to Samya Sunshadow, a halfling Empath from his homeland. He spends most of his time in The Crossing or at his home in Kaerna.
In Moliko 355, Meriwythr was inducted into the Lorethew Mentor Society. He considers this his finest achievement to date, and takes his position as mentor quite seriously.
(UPDATE, year 359) Meriwythr, still and ever a bachelor, spends most of his time in Theren or Riverhaven, though he does still visit Crossing on a regular basis. Fulfilling a life-long dream, Meriwythr has recently served as a barrister in two Court cases. In both, he defended female Empaths. Though he won his first case, he lost the second -- and much more publicized -- case, the 'treason trial' of the Empath Jelantha. Forced to watch his client exiled and branded, Meriwythr retreated back to Theren for many months. Though his feelings toward Jelantha were mixed (anyone who talked to Meri during the trial could tell quite easily that he did not at all care for the accused), he feels very strongly that justice was not served, and he is not overly anxious to return to the legal arena.
A recent tragedy in Meriwythr's life was the death of his dear friend Nynis Goldkeeper, whom he'd always admired as a lady of true quality. Though Nynis has since returned, miraculously, from the dead, Meriwythr has been heard to comment that he still misses her -- despite having visited with her several times in Theren.
On the heels of the Lady Nynis' return to the living, Meriwythr had an explosive quarrel with his young cousin Carys. It is rumoured that the argument stemmed from Carys' relationship with a Theren man, but Meriwythr will neither confirm nor deny the rumours.
