Tips on how to start the game with a better character

The most important thing you must do to make the game better is to spend a lot of time creating the right character. Re-rolling ability scores may seem boring, but you will be rewarded with a character that can do more (e.g. carry more, learn higher level spells, etc.) than an average one can.

Here are a few tips on how to get "free" items:

Basic tip: After creating your character, spend all of the money you can at either the Candlekeep Inn or the Temple of Oghma (Money cannot be carried over) - then "export" your character (this is done through the Character Status screen). Quit the game you are currently in, start a new game, and "Import" the character you just saved (instead of creating a new character). You will have all the items you purchased in your Inventory and a new allowance of Gold.
Recommended for: Any player.

Intermediate Tip # 1: This tip is nearly identical to the Basic Tip, except you visit the Friendly Arm Inn or Beregost to make your purchases. Doing this should help increase your XP a small amount. You can also take the items (what little they have) off of any NPC's you find.
Recommended for: Players who are familliar with nearby locations.

Intermediate Tip # 2: Attacking people for their items may seem evil [it will lower your Reputation (Reputation is reset each time you restart) - if you are a Paladin, kill only one person per "export" or your will become a "Fallen Paladin"], but it can be a great way to gain hard to find items. When selecting a target, choose one who appears to be wearing armor or unusual clothing - you are more likely to have a tougher battle, but the rewards can be worth it. Specific targets can be found in Advanced Tip #3.
Recommended for: Players who don't mind killing for Profit (and who are patient enough if they need to reload several times to kill someone).

Advanced Tip # 1: Duping Items - To duplicate items, you must already have a character ready (and some item(s) to copy). Start up a multiplayer game, and Import six (or less - but at least two) copies of the same character (using all six - or less - character slots). Start the game, and go to the Inventory screen - give all the items you want to copy to ONE character, and export this character ONLY. Repeat as neccessary.
Recommended for: Players who can figure out how to get a multiplayer game running (off or online), and Characters who can hold a large amount of weight.

Advanced Tip # 2: Duping Items for Better Items - Combine Intermediate Tip #1 with Advanced Tip #1 (Duping items and selling them to buy better items), and you can get some great Items out of it. Here are some big ticket items that I recommend: In Beregost, you can buy a suit Full Platemail (Heaviest and Strongest regular Armor), Bracers AC6, Shadow Armor (Magic Leather Armor - increases "Hide in Shadows"), Dagger of Venom (+2, Poisons foes), several Necklaces (e.g. Protection +1, Shielding), and a wide variety of Magic (mostly +1) Weapons, Armors, and Ammunition.
Recommended for: Same as Advanced Tip #1.

Advanced Tip # 3: Killing for Profit (Specific Targets) - The following people are a good source of items (and XP): Town Guard (in Candlekeep only - they are tougher elsewhere) (Diffuculty: Average - easier if well armed/armored) - Suit of Platemail, Helm; Firebrand Everhair (Name?) (The Mage located inside the Candlekeep Inn) (Diffuculty: High - He casts spells, so equip good armor, weapons, and have good saving throws - and good luck!) - Mage Robe* ("Traveller's Robe" - Protection From Missiles/Poison), approx. 400GP, approx. 2700XP; ??? (Woman who wants you to fetch her book) (Difficulty: Medium - casts spells, but is much weaker than Firebrand) - Mage Robe* (Robes of Fire Protection). Avoid killing the following people as they will kill you every time: Gorion (Your Mentor), ??? (The mage who gives you the ID Scroll), Bentley Mirrorshade (Sp?) (Innkeep at the Friendly Arm Inn).
* Mage Robes are the only body armor a Mage can wear (Multi-class mages can cast spells while wearing one of these), and only a Mage (single or multi-class) can wear them.
Recommended for: Same as Intermediate Tip #2.
