Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 19

         While Hester and Dimmesdale waited
for Pearl to return, she adorned herself
in flowers. When Pearl finally came
into view, she stood fixedly on the
      opposite side of the brook.
         Pearl pointed at Hester’s chest.
Then, she slipped into a state of
tantrum; maybe because her mother had
removed the scarlet letter or perhaps
      because Dimmesdale had taken her
      place next to Hester.
      Finally, Hester refastened the scarlet
letter telling the minister she would rid
      it from herself at mid-ocean.
Hester had to drag Pearl to
      Dimmesdale. When she stood before
him, he thought he could relieve all the
tension with a kiss. Therefore, he
kissed her on her brow, but she ran to
the brook and tried to wash it off with
      water.
Pearl points an accusing finger at
Hester’s bosom while she stands
on the other side of the brook.
