WILLIAM WALLACE
William Wallace is Scotland’s greatest national hero. He has led the rebellion against England in the 13th century. At that time, England, under the rule of Edward I was occupying Scotland in order to extend the English kingdom. The situation was terrible in Scotland : Not only the country was under the dictatorship of its neighbor ( who established laws such as the interdiction of using weapons and the prima nocte who allowed the English sheriff to have the virginity of each bride in his jurisdiction ), but there was a smell of civil war due to the incapacity of the clans to unite themselves against the oppressor ( some clans were in England’s side ). William Wallace arrived in this troubled period with his band of rebels and began to do some « terrorist » acts against the English. Through all his acts, he began to gain the support of many Scottish nobles who gave him the leadership of an army at the battle of Stirling in 1295. At this battle, the English were three times as numerous than the Scottish, and Wallace’s army was promised to a dark destiny. But the English under-estimated their opponents and lost. After this battle, Wallace was appointed High protector of Scotland and gained more support, but did not succeed in uniting the clans. In order to resolve the Scottish problem, Edward I corrupted many Scottish peers to prevent Wallace from gaining reinforcements at the battle of Falkirk. In this battle, the Scottish army was obliterated by the English. Feeling betrayed, Wallace ( after having killed the nobles who had faked him ) abandoned the cause of the nobles to continue the fight on his own. He was captured in 1305 and brought to London where he was executed. This is what all History books said about him. But in reality, at the very moment of his execution, Wallace was rescued by the Celtic god LUG who transported him in another dimension where time runs slower. LUG did it because he thought that Wallace was a brave and reckless warrior and that he had to die on a battlefield and not on the block. Wallace have recently reappeared in our dimension and is now a knight at the service of King Arthur.
