Level 6: Menace of the Leopold

Mission 6 isn't particularly difficult, but it is time consuming. When the mission starts, pan down slightly to the lower-right: that bombed-out house is where you'll spend quite a bit of your time. The positioning of the guards in and around the house means that they basically have every area covered. You'll find it's impossible to move and operate effectively unless they're all eliminated.

For now, concentrate on the Green Beret. Have him silently kill that single patrolling near your starting point, and hide his body against the western wall of the house. After that's done, you'll enter the house from the southwestern end -- the Green Beret can climb up the section of wall just to the right of the turret. As soon as you climb up (making sure the other guards' backs are turned), kill that stationary guard from behind and hide his body next to the grandfather clock. Then, when the coast is clear, kill that other patrolling guard on the western half of the building. But...it's important that you kill him when he's on the western side of that section of wall he walks around; that way, you can kill him -- and his body will fall -- where the others can't see it. After those two guards are dead, run back to the wall and climb back down. Now it's time to take out the other guards in the house. Sneak around the northernmost end of the house until you come to that ladder leading back inside (be sure to avoid the guard on the other side of the barbed wire). From there, you can climb up the ladder, and silently eliminate the other guards inside the house. Now things get a little tricky. There should be two more immediate threats: the stationary guard to the west of your position, just south of the barbed wire; and a single patrolling guard near the other set of stairs. After all the guards in the house are dead and their bodies hidden behind walls, place the noise maker at the top of the set of white stairs to the south. If all goes well, that single patrolling guard will run up the stairs and you can kill him from behind. Just remember that if there are any bodies in his view when he runs up the stairs, he will most likely go over to investigate and then sound the alarm...essentially foiling your plan. Once he's dead, you can have the Green Beret sneak down the stairs and kill the stationary guard when he's looking away; no one will be left alive to see the assassination or the corpse.

Now it's on to step two. While the giant cannon seems so close, there is no direct route to it -- you must take a roundabout path first south, then east, and then northwest. While there are a few more guards to contend with at the southern part of the map, your greatest concern is the SDKFZ 231, which patrols the road from east to west. Have your Green Beret take out the guards near the large rock outcropping just south of the house. When it's safe, move the Sniper and Sapper through the house, and then south to the rock, where they'll join up with the Green Beret. Taking out the armored vehicle is actually pretty easy. All you need to do is have the Sapper plant one of his time bombs to the south of the bombed-out house to the east. Then (from the safety and cover of the large outcropping), the Sapper can flick the switch, right as the SDKFZ 231 passes to the southern end of the building and is right on top of the bomb. A couple of guards from the compound will run over to investigate, but don't worry -- that's what you want. They won't sound the alarm, and will go back to their posts after a couple of seconds. That's your chance to have the Green Beret ambush them from behind. You can even use the pistol if you plan it right, because the sound is too far away from the other guards to raise the alarm or attract anyone else. After that's done, move the Sniper and Sapper up to join the Green Beret.

Now it's the Sniper's turn to have some fun. Your next greatest threat is a single stationary guard to the northeast of your current position. He constantly scans the southern area, so it's imperative that you take him out. Position the Sniper to the right of the bombed-out building, just out of the guard's range, and put a bullet in his skull. One he's dead, you'll have a bit of breathing room. From there, the rest of the mission is pretty smooth sailing. You'll continue to rely on the Green Beret to do most of your dirty work, sneaking into the compound and taking out the guards, but the Sniper will also come in handy for killing those soldiers the Green Beret can't safely reach. It's not enough to just sneak past all the soldiers and just plant the charge at the railway gun; you'll need to take out most of the surrounding guards so you can get in and escape safely. Your greatest advantage at this point is that the gun separates the northern end of the tracks from the southern end, you you've got excellent cover. I found its easiest to kill all of the relevant guards before even approaching the gun for the demolition work. Once you destroy it, all hell will break loose, and there will be too many guards running around to stay safe. At this point in the mission there are really two primary threats: the bombed-out house to the north of the gun, which holds a few guards; and the machinegun nest guarding your extraction point. Your best bet is to go through the house and kill those guards with the Green Beret, using the noise maker where needed. Once they're dead, you'll be free to take out the machine gun nest, blow the train, and beat a hasty retreat out of there.

Mission accomplished.
