Level 14: D-Day Kick Off
When the scenario starts, your commandos are in a rowboat to the southwest of what seems like an impregnable island fortress. Your job is to somehow land on the island, and have the Sapper destroy all the gun emplacements. Well, I tried for about two hours just to establish a beachhead -- without success. No matter where you land the boat on that main strip of beach, the patrolling guards will see you. And, even if you can manage to have the Marine swim to shore, the largely open area diminishes his use as an assassin. Keep in mind that we encountered all this trouble before we even thought of destroying the gun emplacements. The truth is, what seems like one of the most difficult missions in the game is actually one of the easiest, and this may very well be the shortest walkthrough in this strategy guide.
Do not attempt to land at the beach in front of you. Instead, hug the borders of the screen and travel all the way to the easternmost part of the map, and then all the way to the north. If you're careful, and time to movement of the rowboat to coincide with the enemy patrols, you should be able to get to the northeast corner of the map pretty easily. When you do run into a spot where you can't pass by without being seen, don't worry, because the Sniper has a unique ability you may not be aware of -- he can shoot from the boat. Have the Sniper silently take out any threats and proceed on your merry way.
From the northeast corner of the map, continue hugging the map as you travel all the way west. Make sure you continue to watch the movements of enemy soldiers, making good use of the point of view feature. You won't need the Sniper or his bullets when you land, so fire at will. Your goal is to bring the Driver to shore, and then immediately take the rowboat back out to sea where it can't be seen. Have the Driver crawl south -- avoiding all guards -- until he gets to the unoccupied Panzer II tank. Once he gets in that baby, the fun really starts! The tank can kill almost every single German soldier on the island. Once that's done, the Sapper can easily place the explosives at the gun emplacements and blow them all to hell. When they're all destroyed, just jump back in the rowboat, head to the red buoy in the southeast corner of the map, and the mission will be complete.
