Occupations for Cultured Gentlefolk
Below is a list of the various branches of knowledge which
together made up the body of education for cultured gentlefolk in
Japan, together with their japanese names. Ideally, one should have
some knowledge of all of these and a degree of accomplishment in
several, but few people had the leisure to reach such a desirable
level. For game purposes, anyone with KS: Upper class society, or the
High Society skill will have a basic knowledge of what this stuff is
about, but won't be able to perform unless they have the specific
skill

For those interested in getting a little further involved, a
knowledge of literature actually involved memorising great chunks of
"the classics". These were texts, the earliest of which were derived
from China (particularly Confucian thought), while the later ones
were of Japanese origin. The 13 classics are made up of the 5
Classics (Gokyo, #1-5), the Small classics (Shokyo, #1, 2), Great
classics (Daikyo, #3, 4) and Middle classics (Chukyo, #5-9) - the
titles of which are given below.
