Hangman
Scott Petersen was a straight A student from a poor neighbourhood.
He took his chance at college on an ROTC studentship, despite his
father's opposition. After graduating in computing, he went into the
army. His talent for improvisation, together with a superb physique
and his engineering background, led him into the special forces. He
served with distinction in the Gulf war and several years later, he
returned to visit his ailing father. After years away from the old
neighbourhood, Scott was horrified when he found how it had
degenerated. On his first night home, walking the streets, he came
upon an old man being beaten. Scott rescued him and over the next few
days checked to see how he was getting on. A friendship developed.
The old man was known to Scott as Louie the fence - a former petty
criminal. Now he complained how the "old way" had broken down,
criminals plagued neighbourhoods all over the city and the police
were losing ground.
Scott's father died shortly thereafter, but Scott didn't return to
the army. Few recognised the burly soldier as the slim boy who had
left 14 years before. Changing his name and moving into his father's
auto business as the "new mechanic", Scott is planning his own
personal war on criminals. When he is ready, he will fight for his
neighbourhood, his city and if need be, the whole damn country.
After seeing what had happened to the city while he was away,
Scott decided not to re-enlist - a decision which has made some
people in the army very interested in what he is up to. The only
people who know of his true reasons are Louie and his old NCO and
best friend in the army, Sgt. Brooks. He is also from an inner city
neighbourhood and understands Scott's new crusade perfectly. Scott
also has one other useful contact. He has started a romance with a
charming reporter, Lousie Warner - initially as an
"information-gathering" exercise. Although she doesn't know his true
identity, Louise's devotion to exposing corruption and neglect in the
city's bureaucracy has caught Scott's heart. Now the romance is for
real. And the campaign begins...
