Ten of Swords

History and Appearance

The Ten of Swords is an immortal and a member of the Court of Swords. However, he is something of an outcast for two reasons. The first is that he is headstrong and stubborn - a trait that has never made his passage through even the relatively straight-forward intrigues of the Court of Swords easy. The second is that he is cursed, although the reason for this is lost so far in the past that no-one remembers except perhaps the Eremite. Certainly Ten can't recall. But bad things always happen around him. People he gets close to die, causes he support fail, things he trust betray him. As a result he has become known as "the warrior who has never lost a fight and never won a war" and he has - not surprisingly - become solitary, cynical and bitter. Indeed, he would be shunned by all the other immortals, except for his singular abilities in combat. Like all the immortals, it is very difficult to kill him permanently, but unlike most of them it is very hard even to injure him significantly. Wounds that would fell a normal man "only make him angry" as the saying goes, and he rapidly heals even mortal wounds

Appearance

The Ten of Swords is a stocky man of muscular build. He normally wears his light brown hair cropped fairly short. His face is square, with a solid jaw, bristling brows and a scowl that seems carved on. He has more scars than anyone could acquire in a lifetime.

Character notes

Ten of Swords has spent a lot of time in modern worlds as well as more primitive ones, and he has become an expert with all kinds of weapons as a result. Unlike many of the Court of Swords, he is as likely to use a pump-action shotgun as a sword. This kind of opportunism is yet another reason that his compatriots don't seek his company.

Because of this, Ten has spent most of his very long life in association with humanity, rather than his peers. He pities their short life and their blindness to the breadth of the universe, but at the same time he feels more kinship with them than many of the immortals. He doesn't seek therefore to rule, or even to set up dynasties, but travels about righting such wrongs as seem obvious to him. He's the archetypal "masked stranger", appearing out of nowhere to battle the bad guys, then disappearing again.
